Comet Falls, Mount Rainier National Park

4.5
#6 of 8 in Nature in Mount Rainier National Park
Upper Comet Falls is a waterfall in Pierce County, Washington. It is located along Van Trump Creek and is located a ways above Comet Falls. The falls may have been formed as a result of the floods of 2003 and 2006 that came down Van Trump Creek. There used to be a bridge spanning the creek just below the falls, but it has been out since the debris flows in 2001 washed it away. The falls are easily seen from where the bridge used to be. Approaching the falls closely would not be terribly difficult, but one would have to climb over large boulders that were likely left there after the floods of 2003 and 2006.

The climb is steep and so me of the trail is Sandy and slippery. But the view of the waterfall is awesome. You can take this hike a bit further and enjoy either Mildred point and/or Van Trump hikes, w...  more »

One of the best waterfalls in the state. It is 1.9 miles one way with a 900 foot elevation gain. This can be moderate to very difficult depending on your capabilities. Bring plenty of water. WELL wort...  more »

Where to stay in Mount Rainier National Park

You could visit Mount Rainier National Park on a day trip from Seattle, but you'll probably want to stay in or closer to the park to maximize your time there. The park provides three developed campgrounds and one primitive one with nearly 500 individual sites between them. For extra creature comforts, book a room at either the National Park Inn or the larger Paradise Inn. Many park visitors lay their heads in the villages west of the park along National Park Highway. Places such as Jasper, Mineral Lake, and Alder Lake offer a mix of lodges, inns, and bed and breakfasts, almost all of which deliver full views of towering Mount Rainier. You might also find reasonable summer deals on hotels at Crystal Mountain Ski Resort just north of the park, though this is a less convenient option.
