White Pines Forest State Park, Mount Morris

(4.5/5 based on 130+ reviews on the web)
White Pines Forest State Park, more commonly referred to as White Pines State Park, is an Illinois state park in Ogle County, Illinois. It is located near the communities of Polo, Mount Morris and Oregon. The 385acre park contains the southernmost remaining stand of native white pine trees in the state of Illinois, and that area, 43acre, was designated an Illinois Nature Preserve in 2001.The area was poised to become a state park in 1903, but a veto by Governor Richard Yates prevented that from occurring. Supporters continued to press for the White Pines Woods, as it was once known, to receive state park designation throughout the period 1903-1927. In 1927 the park was established with help from supporters in the Chicago media. The park contains two freshwater streams, dolomite rock formations, and a variety of activities generally associated with Illinois state parks. Along Pine Creek, one of the park's two streams, fords were constructed instead of bridges allowing visitors to drive through the creek.

  • Love this park. There are a couple of fords,(yes the kind where u drive through a stream in your car, not for the feint of heart after a hard rain) at the entrance, so check to make sure the river is down and the park is open. Beautiful stand of old growth pine, I believe one of the last in IL. Great hikes, an old WPA built main lodge with a sweet gift shop (ice cream!!) Nice campgrounds. I first came here about 40 years ago, went back a few times as a kid, then went back this year. It has improved since I was here. Very pretty little spot. Great bird watching too!
  • Absolutely am amazing place. Never seen a park so well taken care of and beautiful. They weddings they offer are fantastic too if you're looking to get hitched. Check it out in the fall!
  • Loved the trails and its really well maintained. The picnic area by the river is quite lovely. Would love to stay at the cabins some day.
  • Nice park with plenty of hiking trails and access to water. There tent camping isn't the best in my opinion pretty close together kind of like Tent City! Drive Thru water areas with a good restaurant nestled in the park. There are cabins as well that can be rented and a nice gift shop with some great chocolates and so on.
  • Thoroughly enjoyed our overnight stay at White Pines. Wonderful cabins, great hiking trails and beautiful scenery. Will definitely be back!
