Andy Griffith Museum, Mount Airy

Specialty Museum
Stop by and say howdy to one of American television's icons at Andy Griffith Museum. Although the famous actor was known for his work on TV, he was also a producer and a singer. Inside the museum, you'll find the largest collection of Andy Griffith memorabilia in the world, including television props and items from Griffith's own collection. The attraction is a labor of love by Griffith's friend Emmett Forrest, who established the museum with his donation of memorabilia. Forrest was a lifelong friend of Griffith's, and he spent 25 years planning for the attraction's 2009 opening. • Nice staff, a good bit to see! The museum is undergoing renovations currently, which sort of undermines the experience, but the curator said it'd be done by July! All-in-all, a good stop, especially if your a fan of Andy.
  • If you loved the show you'll love this! Lots of pics & info & pieces from the show. Definitely a tourist spot. Some of the museum was closed for renovations but still has a lot of photo opportunities.
  • Undergoing renovations. Very little to see and spread over two buildings and two floors. Don't waste your money, wait until the museum reopens
  • We visited with family (a couple of family members are big fans), including a couple of tweens, and had a decent time. But we expected and wanted a little more. There was no "intro" or "background" video on Andy (wish they would have had a room/theater with this running) and overall they were lacking memorabilia. They are currently remodeling, so hopefully it will improve. Some parts were definitely interesting, and the seemingly unrelated room dedicated to the siamese twins from the area was fascinating but also lacked content. Again, a better-produced video would help. I would suggest the museum invest in some video production, it would really enhance the visit. If you are a fan, it's worth a visit, especially since it's pretty cheap. Positives: Some interesting memorabila, several different buildings/rooms. Inexpensive (only $6 or so). Negatives: No "intro" video/film (this would really enhance the visit), not enough "stuff".
  • The Andy Griffith Museum exhibit includes: Andy Griffith’s (Andy Taylor) sheriff’s shirt from The Andy Griffith Show, as well as original items from the courthouse desk; along with Otis’s original suit and original jail keys from TAGS. Also on exhibit is Don Knotts’ (Barney Fife) original salt and pepper suits from TAGS and Return to Mayberry, along with other items from his career. George Lindsey’s (Goober Pyle) original “Goober cap,” pinstriped suit, and work clothes from TAGS are on exhibit as well. A new exhibit honoring Betty Lynn (Thelma Lou) was completed for her 90th birthday celebration and features artifacts from her film and television career. A new Mount Airy to Mayberry photography exhibit features people and places in Mount Airy that Andy included in TAGS. A 270-degree mural of Mayberry and much more is on display. Your ticket also gets you in to the Historic Earle Theatre & Music Heritage Hall, and the Siamese Twins exhibit; both emphasize Surry County history.
