As a "flatlander" coming from sea level this hike nearly killed me, but it was so worth it. I recommend (unlike what I did) waiting a couple of days to acclimatise to the altitude if you arent used...

This is such an amazing hike!!! Me an 2 friends went in the first week of October 2021. We had beautiful fall scenery and there was a light coating of snow on the mountains. We only saw 3 other people the whole hike. We camped at Zapata Falls the night before our hike, it took us 4 hours to get to the lake and 3 hours to get back to camp. It was fun listening to the echo back at the lake! Take a lot of water! And you get pretty hungry from such a long hike so food is a good idea to. The hike is tiring, but so worth it-even if you don't make it to the lake. It's pretty easy until the first creek crossing, then it's pretty steep until the second creek crossing, then you go downhill alittle until the third creek crossing, then it's a steady uphill climb until you get to the meadow.

The scenery at South Zapata Lake is breath taking. The hike is 4 miles from Zapata Falls. It was well worth the walk.
