  • For a small town Museum, the Monticello Railway Museum packs a lot into a small space. In two hours or less you can get a look at railroading in central Illinois for the last 150 years. Monticello, as...  more »

  • Had my daughter's 5th birthday there and it was amazing! Great place to have a party and then take a train ride!
  • We took my son and 4 year old grandaughter and she enjoyed it very much
  • This place is delightful. There are many cars to walk through, rides available (we weren't able to ride due to time constraints, but plan to return and do so), a little shop in the station, and a switch house. The switch house was very interesting, as they have sample switches that aren't hooked up to anything that you can pull and release. We spent a couple of hours exploring, particularly the train shed. They've even got an aquarium car! Since they have cars from different decades, it's fun to go through and see the difference conveniences each offered. It's like walking through little slices of history. I was pleased with the cleanliness of it all, and highly recommend it!
  • Went here on their Railroad Days event September of 2016 with my railroad buddies (I'm a former conductor with CSX and volunteer at the Indiana Transportation Museum) and had the biggest blast i've had in years. I will always cherish that experience. This weekend I will be signing up to volunteer and taking the rules test. Good for all ages is meant literally- if you go here, even involve yourself with this place, and keep your mind on safety first, you will have tons of fun. They have a great operation with two stations, a great and significant mix of operational museum pieces including a working steam engine, and a bike path with a picnic area right along the track. You can ride the train into downtown Monticello, eat some food and hike back to Nelson's Crossing on the bike path or take the train back. Head on up to the signal tower and learn how railroading was really done from all angles. This museum is one of the midwest's greatest treasures
  • The volunteers are knowledgeable and really enjoy working at the museum!
