Mobile Bay, Mobile

4.3
#4 of 7 in Historic Sites in Mobile
Mobile Bay is an inlet of the Gulf of Mexico, lying within the state of Alabama in the United States. Its mouth is formed by the Fort Morgan Peninsula on the eastern side and Dauphin Island, a barrier island on the western side. The Mobile River and Tensaw River empty into the northern end of the bay, making it an estuary. Several smaller rivers also empty into the bay: Dog River, Deer River, and Fowl River on the western side of the bay, and Fish River on the eastern side. Mobile Bay is the fourth largest estuary in the United States with a discharge of 62000cuft of water per second. Annually, and often several times during the summer months, the fish and crustaceans will swarm the shallow coastline and shore of the bay. This event, appropriately named a jubilee, draws a large crowd because of the abundance of fresh, easily caught seafood it yields. Mobile Bay is the only place on earth where jubilees are a common occurrence.Mobile Bay is 413sqmi in area. It is 31mi long by a maximum width of 24mi. The deepest areas of the bay are located within the shipping channel, sometimes in excess of 75ft deep, but the average depth of the bay is 10ft.HistorySpanish explorers were sailing into the area of Mobile Bay as early as 1500, with the bay being marked on early maps as the Bahía del Espíritu Santo . The area was explored in more detail in 1516 by Diego de Miruelo and in 1519 by Alonso Álvarez de Pineda. In 1528, Pánfilo de Narváez travelled through what was likely the Mobile Bay area, encountering Native Americans who fled and burned their towns at the approach of the expedition. This response was a prelude to the journeys of Hernando de Soto, more than eleven years later.

  • This is a beautiful place to sit and relax or watch the birds and the fisherman. The wind was very strong the day we were there, but otherwise a beautiful place. The water is so serene and calming.  more »
  • We got an education on how important this water shed and area are to so many p.ants and animals. Plus we just liked watching the birds, turtles, and even the grasses caressed by the breeze. This place...  more »
  • Viewing the Bay was so peaceful and lovely to look at. The water is the most striking color and being able to see it first hand and not in a photo was great!  more »

  • The Mobile bay is tremendous. I miss my vacation at Carnival Cruise . The bay looks beautiful. My experience at Carnival Cruise was awesome because I have independence for whatever I want to do in the cruise. I was in the heaven. I did ate a lots of food especially the delicious Reuben sandwich the cruise cafe made and Guy's Burgers. Their Froyo is deeelicious. Their activities is fun. I went to the cruise with my family. Overall, the bay is awesome
  • This is a transportation company. They pick me up so doctor appointments. The cars are always clean and the drivers very friendly.
  • I love being near the water. So beautiful
  • the shrimp festival which started in 1971 is a big hit in summer. The white sand beaches are just too good and the powdery sand which escapes through your legs gives you that great feeling which makes you sink into the traditional way of their existence.
  • Hey, it's Mobile and a bay. Not a bad combo.
