Misquamicut State Beach is a Rhode Island state park in the town of Westerly. It is a part of Misquamicut Beach which is a three-mile length of beach that extends westward from Weekapaug to Watch Hill and separates Winnapaug Pond from the Atlantic Ocean.HistoryThe state beach was created in 1959 after a devastating hurricane in 1954 destroyed much of the Misquamicut community. In 1992, the state beach area was nearly forced to close when the forty-year-old septic system broke. The Division of Parks and Recreation was not allowed to build a new septic field so a switch was made to a waterless form of waste management. In 1999, the state built a $1.5 million bathing pavilion (the James J. Federico Jr. State Beach Pavilion) with heated shower stalls and Clivus Multrum composting toilets. The building project was completed in 2000 with a $700,000 expansion and paving of the parking lot. The lot now holds up to 2700 cars.Activities and amenitiesThe state beach offers over a half-mile of oceanfront recreation. The beach pavilion includes a gift shop, shade gazebos, lifeguard towers and outdoor cold showers. Two annual music festivals, Springfest and Fallfest, are held each May and September under the auspices of the Misquamicut Business Association.

One 50 year old momma and 6 teenagers decided to have an impromptu beach day, 90 minute drive from our home. We ended up not getting down to the shore until the afternoon (teens!), but we were able to...  more »

Arrived at the beach around 8:00am, waited in line with 2 small children for 1 hour for the parking lot to open, than we continued to wait for our turn in line. Paid $12 for the out of state weekday parking. Once we settled into to the beach, noticed there was absolutely NO waste recepticals to dispose garbage. (They did offer a plastic bag for garbage upon paying for parking) It took just about 45 minutes to leave the parking lot as well due to it only being a one way. There was also no direction of traffic into or exiting the parking lot. As much as my family loves going to the beach, we will not be returning to this particular one. If you have small children, make sure they use the restroom at a store or restaurant close by prior to entering the Beach area as you will be at a stand still on a one way street until the parking lot opens.

I actually work at this beach (a little bias, I know) I have to say, going by what very many (about 90%) customer have said, we are one of the best beaches in the state. Although there isn't much we can do to help alleviate the traffic (as the road is one lane) we try and go as speedy as possible at the booths. Normally (on a busy day) our lot is the cheapest on the strip. In order to help some folks out, as the website hasn't been updated in some time, prices are as follows: RI registration $6 weekday and $7 weekend/holiday. Out of state registration $12 weekday and $14 weekend/holiday. The only discount we offer is elderly rates for persons 65 years and older. (Half the price of the above rates) Also, we open at 9am weekdays and 8:30 weekends. ^-^ You won't be disappointed with a visit to Squam! Especially if you're looking for some waves (p.s. the "rules" are pretty slack (aiside alcohol containers) unless there's an actual issue.) As of season year 2017

No trash cans anywhere, which is probably why the bathrooms had so many used needles lying around. Disgusting! Never again!

Have been going to misquamicat for many years. Started to take my children there when my oldest was 7 and continued until a few years ago, he is now 30!! They facilities are great as is the beach and the terrific waves, there's also a small water park across the street and a little boutique plus the facilities with showers, changing rooms, concession stand. We all loved going there, I look forward to some day taking my grandchildren there!
