Misquamicut State Beach, Misquamicut

(3.8/5 based on 360+ reviews on the web)
Misquamicut State Beach is a Rhode Island state park in the town of Westerly. It is a part of Misquamicut Beach which is a three-mile length of beach that extends westward from Weekapaug to Watch Hill and separates Winnapaug Pond from the Atlantic Ocean.HistoryThe state beach was created in 1959 after a devastating hurricane in 1954 destroyed much of the Misquamicut community. In 1992, the state beach area was nearly forced to close when the forty-year-old septic system broke. The Division of Parks and Recreation was not allowed to build a new septic field so a switch was made to a waterless form of waste management. In 1999, the state built a $1.5 million bathing pavilion (the James J. Federico Jr. State Beach Pavilion) with heated shower stalls and Clivus Multrum composting toilets. The building project was completed in 2000 with a $700,000 expansion and paving of the parking lot. The lot now holds up to 2700 cars.Activities and amenitiesThe state beach offers over a half-mile of oceanfront recreation. The beach pavilion includes a gift shop, shade gazebos, lifeguard towers and outdoor cold showers. Two annual music festivals, Springfest and Fallfest, are held each May and September under the auspices of the Misquamicut Business Association.

  • Have been going to misquamicat for many years. Started to take my children there when my oldest was 7 and continued until a few years ago, he is now 30!! They facilities are great as is the beach and the terrific waves, there's also a small water park across the street and a little boutique plus the facilities with showers, changing rooms, concession stand. We all loved going there, I look forward to some day taking my grandchildren there!
  • Absolutely loved our visit! We exited the car with the hot sun baking us on the way past the dunes but once we past to the beach side the cool breeze off the water was refreshing. The water was chilly (mid-June) but felt great. The sand on the beach was perfect for sandcastles. While there were a lot of people on the beach, I found it easy to listen to the water and forget about everything else.
  • One the best beaches I have been to. You have to bring your own garbage bags and throw it in the dumpster. I saw another post say there is no garbage cans. There isn't accept next to the concession stand. You are told that upon arriving and parking in the beach parking lot. The people are nice and the beach is pretty clean. Gets pretty crowded but there is plenty of room in the ocean. My kids love this place. Best beach to go boogie boarding.
  • It's nice and clean but there are way to many rules. If you're not going to lay on the beach or swim don't go. No digging holes... no playing with things like footballs or softballs, no boogie boards. Way to take the fun out of the beach guys.
  • beautiful beach, good facilities extremely busy in summer it is like going to Hampton Beach
