Misquamicut State Beach is a Rhode Island state park in the town of Westerly. It is a part of Misquamicut Beach which is a three-mile length of beach that extends westward from Weekapaug to Watch Hill and separates Winnapaug Pond from the Atlantic Ocean.HistoryThe state beach was created in 1959 after a devastating hurricane in 1954 destroyed much of the Misquamicut community. In 1992, the state beach area was nearly forced to close when the forty-year-old septic system broke. The Division of Parks and Recreation was not allowed to build a new septic field so a switch was made to a waterless form of waste management. In 1999, the state built a $1.5 million bathing pavilion (the James J. Federico Jr. State Beach Pavilion) with heated shower stalls and Clivus Multrum composting toilets. The building project was completed in 2000 with a $700,000 expansion and paving of the parking lot. The lot now holds up to 2700 cars.Activities and amenitiesThe state beach offers over a half-mile of oceanfront recreation. The beach pavilion includes a gift shop, shade gazebos, lifeguard towers and outdoor cold showers. Two annual music festivals, Springfest and Fallfest, are held each May and September under the auspices of the Misquamicut Business Association.

  • Beach perfect for Bodyboarding because there are beautiful waves, the water is clean and warm compared to the beaches of NH. Get there early to avoid the traffic and pay for cheaper parking. Bring your lunch because the central fastfood is overpriced and is not very good. Beware of the seagulls they are tuned, massive and a little aggressive.

  • We drove along much of the New England Coast visiting beaches, parks, and lighthouses. We had lots to compare from, or some of them would receive higher ratings. We went in early November, so there wa...  more »
  • Hubby and I love the shore, but NOT the crowds or noise which plague summer beaches. This is a favorite spot to visit off-season, when the long and beautiful beach is quiet except for a few locals wal...  more »

  • This is the most active beach in Rhode Island. Seriously the parking extends onto the lawns around the parking area because they try to pack as many people into the beach as possible. The massive population of people aside, the beach isn't too bad. Theres a lot of rules for beach goers but the rules keep the place clean and safe. The swimming area is pretty shallow and the sand isn't horribly coarse. This beach will provide a good afternoon beach day to anyone, but it will definitely be crowded when you go.
  • My fav beach in RI. Clean, beautiful water. Clean beach. Great food near by. Parking lot gets packed and jammed so that could be better but you kind of expect that.
  • Love Misquamicut Beach. With the exception of the seagulls. I've never been to a beach where the gulls will literally come and take food right out of your hand. I mean like steal your sandwich from you. If you leave your blanket and your bags are open. They go and pull food right out of your bag. Other than that it's a clean, well maintained facility. Enjoy my time at the beach always. Except them darn gulls.
  • For being a New England beach it's nice. Although once you've experienced turquoise waters with white sandy beaches... no other beach ever stands up quite the same again. So this place is a state beach, so it has large facilities (regular bathrooms also has regular port-o-potties), snack bar, lifeguards, etc. They do have a carry in & carry out policy.. (everything [specifically garbage/recycling] you bring in...you need to bring out, no exceptions) as a result, place is fairly clean.. which makes this place stand out!!! You're not on any bay/cove etc... you're further out on the actual ocean, which allows the water to have REAL movement, resulting in clearer water than you'd see on a bay/cove etc. So this is another huge plus!!! The water was freezing when we went (earlyJuly). Again once you've experienced warm turquoise waters with white sandy beaches... it's hard to call anything else real beach... but in a pinch this place could do. Enjoy!
  • The beach was beautiful! Clean and so relaxing. The reason I'm giving 4 stars is because the washrooms were absolutely disgusting! I was so grossed out we had only gone there to change cuz they were so raunchy and smelled horrible!!! There were no trash cans anywhere in the washrooms nor on the beach. Was so frustrating! Do they want people to throw their trash all over the place? We carried it back to our cars and threw it somewhere we could find a trash can. The washrooms do close at 6 pm and there is no lifeguard on duty after that. No seashells on the beach, just rocks. Kids still had a great time
