#36 of 142 in Nature in Minnesota
The St. Croix River (Holy Cross) is a tributary of the Mississippi River, approximately 169 miles (272 km) long, in the U.S. states of Wisconsin and Minnesota. The lower 125 miles (201 km) of the river form the border between Wisconsin and Minnesota. The river is a National Scenic Riverway under the protection of the National Park Service. A hydroelectric plant at St. Croix Falls supplies power to the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area.
The St. Croix River rises in the northwestern corner of Wisconsin, out of Upper St. Croix Lake in Douglas County, near Solon Springs, approximately 20mi south of Lake Superior. It flows south to Gordon, then southwest. It is joined by the Namekagon River in northern Burnett County, where it becomes significantly wider. A few miles downstream the St. Croix meets the boundary between Minnesota and Wisconsin, which it demarcates for another 130mi until its confluence with the Mississippi River.
St. Croix River is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our world travel planner, Minnesota Edition.

  • The St. Croix is a wonderful river for boating and fishing, unless it is on the weekend. Weekends tend to be a little crowded, especially in the various no wake zones. But still, marvelous scenery and...  more »

  • One of the great wild and Scenic rivers in the United States. Incredibly beautiful Valley
  • The area is beautiful. The sunset on the bluff was so nice. We came down for the river boat cruise, we were not disappointed! It was so much fun. However I think the whole area needs help with parking. It's crowded and there's never enough.
  • Yeah it's a beautiful place Fat Cat Pizza St Croix been around for years since I was a little kid no maybe won't be 81 years old and still here yet can I still go down there and sit there and visit to St Croix so yeah that's beautiful it'll be there for many years to come
  • The croix is too big and great to provide a summary. I think you could find whatever you are looking for in a wild and scenic river (no white water). The towns that dot it provide a great ammenity.
  • After an adventurous day yesterday, kayaking was fun, although now is the task of replacing the set of keys I lost. So long story short if you find yourself kayaking/ canoe fishing on the Namekagon or St. Croix river (or where the two rivers combine) and you find a set of keys.... more than likley they are the set I lost. I'll even throw you a few bucks if returned. Please share as needed, thanks!
