The Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum is an art museum located on the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis. A teaching museum for the university since 1934, the museum is named for Frederick R. Weisman, and was designed by the renowned architect Frank Gehry. Often called a "modern art museum," the 20,000+ image collection has large collections of Marsden Hartley, Alfred Maurer, Charles Biederman, Native American Mimbres pottery, and Korean furniture.BuildingThe museum's current building, designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry, was completed in 1993. The stainless steel skin was fabricated and installed by the A. Zahner Company, a frequent collaborator with Gehry's office. It is one of the major landmarks on campus, situated on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River at the east end of the Washington Avenue Bridge. The building presents two faces, depending on which side it is viewed from. From the campus side, it presents a brick facade that blends with the existing brick and sandstone buildings. On the opposite side, the museum is a playground of curving and angular brushed steel sheets. This side is an abstraction of a waterfall and a fish.

  • Though this building is very unusual to look at and might even be unsightly for some, it has a beautiful interior. Displays are beautifully arranged and it makes a lovely venue. Parking is right under...  read more »
  • This is a great place, the Museum is free, parking is expensive, it takes 3 dollars an hour. There is a permanent collection with temporary collections that change quite often. Rolf

  • This place is difficult to get to and it's hard to find the front door. The collection right now was somewhat boring to me. The building is gorgeous outside, though, so do a drive-by.
  • Loved it. Simple, small, cute art museum. A great place to spend an hour or two on a date or alone for some ME time. I would definitely recommend this as a free place for a date or a cool place to stop and relax when visiting from out of town.
  • In the Twin Cities and love modern architecture? A stop at the Weisman is surely warranted. Did I mention Frank Gehry? No it was closed, but I was there for the exterior.
  • Excellent art museum on the Minneapolis Campus of the U of M. Check out the transient hotel - touching and sad. Terrific Depression Era paintings of hard work and pain. Many other fine exhibits. A fascinating building that is an art work in itself. Helpful staff.
  • Saw some Andy Warhol pieces. Very cool and it's free.
  • Important place to visit and know learn about Frank Ghery Architecture. Great museum.
