Milwaukee Art Museum, Milwaukee

(4.4/5 based on 1,800+ reviews on the web)
With over 40 galleries, Milwaukee Art Museum displays the work of artists ranging from self-taught folk geniuses to Pablo Picasso. Being itself an architectural landmark, famous for its moveable sunscreen in the shape of wings, that folds and unfolds twice daily, the museum has become an icon for Milwaukee. Apart from paintings, photographs, and video art, among many collections, you'll see Baroque and Renaissance furniture, tableware, and metalwork, as well as the best collection of German Renaissance clocks outside of Germany. The museum has some of the United States' finest collections of American decorative arts, Haitian art, and more. If you get hungry, take a peek at the menu in cafe Calatrava, with entrees inspired by the exhibition currently taking place. • Even the building itself is a moving sculpture, and inside there is always a new exhibit on display so it is worth going back now and again to explore the most resent exhibits. The last one I saw was ...  more »
  • A perfect environment for any exhibit. The building itself is a work of art. Reasonable rates and the staff is very helpful and informative.
  • Seeing the Calatrava addition is a must. Watching the "wings" open & close is magnificent. The collections are very good for a 2nd tier city. Also not to be missed is a meal at the Cafe Calatrava. We ...  more »

  • The Milwaukee Art Museum has a fantastic range of art types (photography, painting, sculpture, etc.) from varying time periods and puts on excellent rotating exhibits. The architecture alone is reason to visit, and the view over the lake from the main lobby area is great. There are also MAM After Dark events with fun live music and art features. This is a great place to take friends or family and is a pretty solid date/afternoon out location as well. I recommend buying a membership if you go with any degree of frequency since you get essentially unlimited access during normal hours in addition to early previews and free admission to MAM After Dark events. Definitely worth the extra dollars.
  • Architecturally this building is absolutely amazing, they offer an amazing dining experience and they have an awesome collection of art. They host monthly events and the staff is always amazing! If you have not been, then you need to go... It's just that simple.
  • Excellent collection. They always have new interesting works in their rotating exhibits. Beautiful building. All around it's one of my favorite places in MKE.
  • Beautiful Lakefront location makes this a great place to spend the day. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Great family day trip. Priced right also.
  • Amazing to see if only for the structure of the building itself. Their standard collection is also very impressive.
