Milwaukee Art Museum, Milwaukee

4.7
#2 of 208 in Museums in Wisconsin
With over 40 galleries, Milwaukee Art Museum displays the work of artists ranging from self-taught folk geniuses to Pablo Picasso. Being itself an architectural landmark, famous for its moveable sunscreen in the shape of wings, that folds and unfolds twice daily, the museum has become an icon for Milwaukee. Apart from paintings, photographs, and video art, among many collections, you'll see Baroque and Renaissance furniture, tableware, and metalwork, as well as the best collection of German Renaissance clocks outside of Germany. The museum has some of the United States' finest collections of American decorative arts, Haitian art, and more. If you get hungry, take a peek at the menu in cafe Calatrava, with entrees inspired by the exhibition currently taking place. • What a day at MAM! I am not sure what to rave about more, the exhibits or the building itself? Everything is infused with art - and it is all yours to interpret and you make whatever you want to make out of it. There is so much to see and do - I literally spent 6 hours walking around till my feet hurt. There is something else about the location of MAM, and the stunning architecture. It is mesmerizing. Are you in a dream? Or in a boat? So ethereal, full of light. You feel like an item with Lake Michigan. is it a whale, or are those wings? And yes, they do pull them in towards closing time at 5pm. Collections are awesome and if you get hungry in between, do try out the restaurant, it is pretty good!
  • Beautiful art by many amazing artists! We spent over 3 hours immersed in the traveling exhibits and the home exhibits. We saw Warhol, Chagall, O'Keeffe, Goya, Picasso, local artists, historical pieces, and silver pieces crafted by Paul Revere. The views of Lake Michigan are just as beautiful as the art. The Cafe was amazing-- so many culinary delights. The people there are kind and helpful and make the experience memorable. We loved how many people were there to enjoy the museum. And we appreciated the educator's discount too! Definitely worth the 2 hour drive to visit and we will be back soon!
  • This is one of my favorite Milwaukee gems. I loved visiting as a teen and I still enjoy it every time I go - the building itself is as stunning as ever, and they’ve got really solid permanent collections - a broad array of different eras/styles. Really worth the visit if you haven’t been yet.
  • The new addition to the museum is an architectural and structural monument. Just that along probably worth a visit for some people. Then you have the nice view of the Lake Michigan and not the least is the collections. So many good art pieces where you can easily spend a day in it. A must visit in the City of Milwaukee.
  • Excellent staff (knowledgeable and genuinely helpful both when I first visited and after two other visits). Delicious food in the restaurant downstairs. Great view and not pricey. For the quality you get, I thought their prices were very low. I would think business lunches would be really popular there. Excellent permanent collection. And I loved the temporary exhibit they had when I last visited. I love how the museum does so many events to bring people together like the After Dark nights with live bands. Membership is worth it.
