The Tridge is the formal name of a three-way wooden footbridge spanning the confluence of the Chippewa and Tittabawassee Rivers near downtown Midland, Michigan, in the Tri-Cities region. Named as a portmanteau of "tri" and "bridge", the structure opened in 1981. It consists of one 31ft tall central pillar supporting three spokes. Each spoke is 180ft long by 8ft wide.HistoryThe bridge was constructed in 1981 at the instigation of the Midland Area Community Foundation . The bridge cost $732,000 to build, and took 6,400 hours of labor. Ten railroad car loads of prefabricated wood, and of concrete were used to construct three arches, which weigh apiece. Each appendage is 180by. Gerace Construction Company worked on the project. As a symbol, the bridge has been popularized and is the subject, for example, of lithographs.RecreationThe Tridge is a tourist attraction. It and its two surrounding parks— in Chippewassee and St. Charles parks—are one of most popular leisure areas downtown. The 3.5mi Chippewa Nature Trail begins at the bridge. The site also marks the starting point of the Pere Marquette Rail Trail, a Michigan Rails to Trails Conservancy Hall of Fame trail. Although being mainly a footbridge, bicycles, skateboards, and in-line skates are also allowed on the bridge. It is the focal point for summer evening concerts. Fishing is generally not permitted from the bridge although it does occur frequently.

  • Ok it was cold - a November afternoon with wind - so not as pleasant as summer time - but the tridge was worth the walk. The wood looks very nice and everything is sturdy to walk around on. Very inter...  more »
  • There are not many tridges around and thus is a new one. Well kept and clean. Where two rivers meet.  more »

  • Magical place to go for a walk, bike, skateboard, or anything else self propelled is perfect. The outdoor scenery is breathtaking for any photographs one might feel moved to capture the moment. Right by Main street of Midland where great opportunities for unique experiences await!
  • Its a really nice and cool place to go. The sceniary is very nice and you can go kayaking there too. And scate boarding or BMXing there and the farmers market is a GREAT place to go shopping for organic or non gmo foods and things. And there is some geocaches there. Its a great way to spend your afternoon or morning. :-)
  • What a wonderful attraction! Midland wouldn't be Midland without it!
  • Visited the Farmer's Market there and it was beautiful. Convenient bike access and rental, as well as walking paths.
  • The Tridge is a unique place, featuring a footbridge that spans two different rivers and has three sides. On one side there is the Farmer's Market and the start of the Rail Trail, and a nicely manicured area with bushes and flowers in the spring, summer, and fall. There are also a group of trees with a plaque to commemorate our relationship with our sister city in Japan. On another side is a larger park featuring lots of space to play, spread out a picnic, or just go for a walk. This side also features a skate park, a large piece of play equipment with a slide and climbing areas for children, and a dog park. This area is completely flooded during the melt season, which could be either march or april depending on the weather. The last side features sports areas for baseball, etc, and more areas to walk, and is called Whiting Park. The Tridge is quintessential Midland, and any stop in the area without a trip to it is a wasted opportunity.
