Monkey Jungle, Miami

3.5
#5 of 6 in Zoos & Aquariums in Miami
Watch Java monkeys dive into pools to fetch a snack from a guide's hand at Monkey Jungle. The Java monkey troop was introduced into the area in 1933 and thrived in the mangrove swamps. This troop and the other 30 species of primates now roam freely among the trees. Catch sight of their playful swinging and curious exploring as you walk through the protected area. Ask about monkey feeding times when you enter. For a better value, visit the attraction's website for a discount coupon. • Small places for these majestic creatures and I wish it was cleaner and larger for them. if it were bigger and nicer for them, I'd have a better review.  more »
  • Had such a great time here with family and friends. Price was very reasonable and got to interact with the monkeys!!! will defiantly be coming back.  more »
  • In a scorching heat, aided by the Green where you are immersed, leisurely stroll in a corridor protected with monkeys around you and accepting the food that you offer. I did not like, the experience with primates (gorillas and orangutans) that I found sad tending to transform into show the approach with these poor animals.

  • This place is HORRIBLE! This is not a “wildlife park”, it is little more than a roadside zoo. The animals are kept in below-standard environments, forced to live in deplorable conditions. I saw animals living in their own excrement with filth and debris, and no enrichment. They were so bored in fact, that some of animals picked on the scabs of their wounds for entertainment. When I went back and asked why some of the animals I had seen before were missing, employees told me they had been transferred elsewhere, but a few other employees stated that in fact, the animals hadn’t been transferred - they had been given too much medication and overdosed, then simply discarded off and taken out of sight. Those employees told me that things are so bad in fact, that they can no longer work there. This place does not deserve to have the words “wildlife”, “park”, “sanctuary” or anything of such a nature in their title. I know most people who visit don’t see the misery that I have seen, but then again most people haven’t worked with wildlife before, and don’t know perhaps what the standards are or should be. This place might be fun to look at for people who don’t know better, but for the workers who work there and animals that are forced to live there, it is a nightmare. This absolutely does not compare to the standard of other wildlife parks and sanctuaries that I have visited as a patron (or worked at as an employee). This place needs to be fined and shut down!
  • The treatment of these animals is horrendous! Monkeys and apes both are very social animals and should be together with room to climb and play. Many were in small metal floored cages with no earth below their feet. These animals are naturally shy and should be allowed cover, not stuck in small cages and forced to be poked and gawked at all day with no place to hide. VETY stressful place for these sentient beings!! It should be SHUT DOWN!
  • Just a Prison for intelligent; sentient beings. Don't spend your money to finance another being's suffering
  • Monkey jungle is terrible. The animals look sick and lethargic. It smells terrible and is not family friendly. I do not recommend this place to anyone.
  • This place needs to be shut down and the animals transferred where they can get proper treatment and care. As a wildlife rehabber, this is unhealthy and cruel.

Where to stay in Miami

Miami's South Beach boasts one of the largest collections of boutique hotels in the country. Though it can be quite expensive, staying in this area ensures proximity to the city's best shoreline, clubs, shopping, and restaurants, not to mention Art Deco buildings. Mid-Beach and downtown also make great places to stay, offering some superb apartment rentals and small hotels, though the neighborhoods are not as glamorous as South Beach. If you're traveling on a budget, avoid the high season during winter months. If money is no object, get a room with a view before it gets too hot along the famous stretch of Collins Avenue between 15th and 23rd Street.
