Southwick's Zoo, Mendon
(4.6/5 based on 360+ reviews on the web)
Family-owned Southwick's Zoo houses over 100 different species of animals. The 120 hectare (300 acre) Southwick homestead was a dairy farm when the family began collecting exotic poultry and other birds. In 1963 the family opened the zoo, and it has since expanded with a chimpanzee exhibit and skyfari ride. Enjoy a 15-minute ride above the zoo to get a bird's-eye view of the exhibits housing sika deer, chimpanzees, elk, and cheetahs. Visit the deer forest for a chance to pet and feed the deer. • Great for all ages! Plenty of parking, large clean complex with a friendly staff. Enjoy the day walking around taking in all the zoo has to offer.
  • I find it the best zoo in the Boston area and they have a few, also better than the William Roger Zoo outside of Providence.
  • My grandchildren had a wonderful time at the zoo. There is so much to see!! They have plenty of rest areas and reasonable food to eat.

  • This zoo is always a great time! I have been many times before with my family, with grandma, with kids, with a date ;) It's a great zoo for anyone! There's a wide selection of animals (a huge selection of monkeys) and plenty of walking space. Kids may not be able to make it through the whole zoo in one visit - it's just enough walking that they tire out, but usually amongst adults or older kids, you can get through the whole zoo. I love catching any of the education shows - the birds and reptiles one is great. I learn something new every time. The food is pretty good, but definitely pricey. They do allow you to bring your own water, but not food into the zoo. They also have a petting zoo, and an open deer park where you can feed the deer. There are also amusement rides (aimed at the little ones - like 3ft and under) and camel rides. There are multiple tents for birthday or other parties.
  • Overall, the exhibits and layout of the zoo were fantastic. My children truly enjoyed themselves. The reason for such a low rating has to do with the price of pretty much everything. Admission was quite high. I spent $60 on food for 4 people and what I received was less than fast food quality. To top off the visit, We rode the Skyfari lift and toward the end of the ride, thick black grease began to drip all over me and my clothing from above. Ruining my clothing and covering my arms. I was told to visit the main office and I would receive a refund. All that was given to me was ONE free admission for an adult during my next visit. I never received a refund for the ride or my admission. The day was a total loss and I spent far more than I should have. Given my experience I cannot say that I will be visiting again and I certainly will not recommend to anyone else.
  • The hands-down best zoo in the region. Lions, Tigers, Giraffes, everything but the kitchen sink. The Deer Forest is an amazing experience as you immerse yourself in a forest environment with dozens of deer. Some are a bit skiddish, though many will come up and eat corn from your hand. The layout isn't too complicated, there are acres to explore, a nice skylift to give you a view of the park from above, and numerous food kiosks to stay full throughout the day.
  • Great family zoo! Not just a glorified petting zoo. Just the right size that you and the kids can see all the attractions within a casual 3-4 hr visit. Thoughtful design with kids in mind: Small carnival rides, a train and even a playground in the middle of the zoo! Would recommend to any family.
  • Fun place to bring the kids. We loved the aviary and the deer habitat. Ticket prices are a bit high but they offer AAA discounts.
