Sun Studio, Memphis

4.7
Elvis Presley recorded his first song at Sun Studio, arguably the birthplace of rock and roll. Country music, blues, R&B, and rockabilly artists recorded here throughout the 1950s, with the most notable names including Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, and B.B. King. Stop by to take a guided tour of the studio's headquarters and see equipment used to record some of the best-known hits in American music history. Highlights include Elvis Presley's microphone, used during a recording session in 1954. Located right in the downtown area, the studio is easily accessible from anywhere in town, with frequent shuttle buses running between this location and other notable music venues in and around Memphis. • What a fun experience! Daniel, our tour guide was fantastic. He was very knowledgeable about the history of the studio and told great stories. So much music history in this little building it's amazing. To think they are still recording the way they did back then is awesome. For music enthusiasts/aficionados, this is a must see. You even get to touch a microphone that was actually used by the king himself! Great time and actually not a long tour.
  • Really cool place to visit. If you are interested to learn how the rock and roll music was born "Sun Studio" is the place. The tour itself is fun and interesting. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. The place is really unique and it's kept almost the same since it was first open. You can feel the vibe of the music and spirit in the air. Highly recommend to see if you are visiting Memphis.
  • If you want to see where Rock N Roll started, this is the place to go. They also have some good root beer and soda! They offer guided tours, which are not expensive and I recommend doing the tour as you get to see all the exhibits as well as see some original records and machines Sam Phillips used to bring some of the most important music stars in history. You can also buy some records here, but they are a little pricey.
  • I have been to Sun Studio 3 times over the years, and with each visit I have taken the guided tour, with each tour being different from the last- the tour guides are all absolutely fantastic and you can tell that they have a genuine interest in the history of Sun, rather than just learning a script and repeating the same things over and over. They’re all super knowledgeable and were able to answer questions from the group without hesitation - the level of information they supply on the tour is outstanding. Sun Studios is an absolute must visit for any music lover - it’s so humbling to know that such a huge number of influential musicians have worked there, and that it’s still a working recording studio to this day. If you’re ever in Memphis make sure you pay a visit!
  • This is a great place. A lot of really cool bands recorded here. You can come here and take a tour or just come and eat food. There are some nice memorial items here. You can walk in for free if you don't take the tour. It is a really cool place to come see and take a picture.
