(4.1/5 based on 320+ reviews on the web)
A. Schwab dry goods store is the only remaining original business on Beale Street in Memphis, Tennessee. A family owned store, their motto is "If you can't find it at A. Schwab, you're probably better off without it!"Established in 1876 by Abraham Joseph Schwab, a Jewish immigrant from Alsace Loraine France, the store is a local tourist attraction with two floors of shopping and, between the first and second floors, a small balcony which houses the Beale Street Museum, a collection of Beale Street memorabilia along with several items and records of the Schwab family, which has run the store throughout its lifetime. It began as a men’s haberdashery, transitioned to a dry goods store, and later evolved into a seller of quirky merchandise. Products include various hoodoo items, assorted dry goods, and tourist memorabilia. A. Schwab's was also the retailer of the largest overalls in the world which sold two pair a year. The overalls were so large they hung from the ceiling.A. Schwab, the oldest store in the Mid-South, is housed in the oldest remaining building on Beale Street. The store was founded at another location on Beale Street and moved to 163 Beale Street in 1911 and expanded into 165 in 1922. Both of these buildings were constructed before 1890. Prior to the expansion, 165 Beale housed a Piggly Wiggly. After 136 years, the Schwab family sold the business at the end of 2011.

  • A. Schwab on Beale Street is one-of-a-kind. Merchandise from bygone days is common here ~ & there is plenty to look @ in this gigantic 140-year-old building. It began as a dry goods store / morphed in...  more »
  • It was a store and looked like some kind of cafe but I didn't eat or drink anything. Truthfully the store didn't seem all that special. It seems that the store is only famous because it is on Beale St...  more »

  • The lady inside was sooooo helpful! She went out of her way just to help us. And we appreciate it sooo much! We now know which hotels to stay at and which ones not to stay at. And thanks to her we're already planning another trip!!! She even gave us her personal cell just to help us out next time we come down. She restored a little more of my faith into humanity. Thank you again for so much of your amazing hospitality. We again, appreciate it so much!!
  • Met the nicest person organizing the store. She made my visit a once in a life time introduction to her hope's for their family store. My friend Lyn and I could have spent hours talking with her looking at the history of the past. Megan thank you for taking the time you spent with us. A once in a life time memory of the floors and old brick walls along with the old treasures. Hope to keep intouch with your dreams for the store Thank you , thank you Most sincerely yours, Gloria Fine-Gutierrez and Lyn Belt Texas friends.
  • Such a cool treasure! I always find something I must have when shopping here!
  • The store is really great since it was remodeled. They have added an old fashioned soda fountain that serves food and drinks. You can also order specialty coffees and alcoholic beverages. In the store you can find all kinds of odd concoctions (hair tonics, vodoo elixirs and pumpkin butter) and a local history museum. They have a large collection of funky hats along with music from many of Memphis artists.
  • This place was wonderful. A real trip down memory lane. Super nice employees. Well worth stopping in.
