Brevard Zoo, Melbourne

4.6
With boardwalks that bring you up to the height of a giraffe's head, Brevard Zoo offers an amazing opportunity to see the black-tongued creatures up close, to pet and feed them, and to be photographed with them. This smallish zoo has more than 650 animals, including multicolored lorikeets (like parrots) you can feed and that may sit on your shoulders. Paddle through the wetlands on a nice, easy kayak ride that gives a different look at many parts of the zoo and its inhabitants. Hop on the Cape to Cairo Express, a train that takes you around Lemur Island, where you can see dromedaries, ostriches, and scimitar oryxes--a species that is extinct in the wild. The zoo is divided into five main areas: Africa, Australasia, Wild Florida, La Selva (the wilderness of South America), and Paws on Play, which has a petting zoo, an aquarium, a pizzeria, and more. If you like zoos but dread the idea of an all-day affair with too much walking, this smaller zoo will appeal to you. If you're a member of another zoo, bring your card and ask if this one has reciprocal admission. • Very nice zoo, well laid out. The best part (for us) was the aviary. The zoo sells food and the birds come and eat out of your hand. Great for kids!  more »

  • Lots of animals! The zoo is well maintained with lots of foliage to keep you shaded. The giraffe exhibit is up high which brings you face to face while you feed them. There is an area to buy and eat lunch as well as snack stands. It takes about two hours to walk through the zoo. There is also a train tour available. Outside the zoo there is a zip line course which takes you through the zoo (safety instructions are provided).
  • We took my grandson for his 1st birthday and we all had a blast. We did the petting zoo and saw reptiles, monkeys, alligators, big cats, tons of birds; yet the most impressive were the giraffes. There we were at the same height as their heads and we got to feed them! What a treat. I've been to many zoos up and down the west coast and a few wildlife parks, yet this was the most fun and the closest we could get to the animals. I look forward to going back one day.
  • Such a treat to be in a place that lets the animals have more of the right of way and we get to watch out for them. A curious giraffe just walked his head up to right over my shoulder while I was relaxing on a high deck. They are beautiful up close. I want to make a point to go back and spend more time there. It's not a typical zoo.
  • Wonderful small zoo. My husband and I stopped on the way to Miami to break up the trip. The tree top walkway allows you to get face to face with the giraffes. It was also amazing being allowed to walk in the enclosed area with the kangaroos as they roamed freely. One kangaroo was sunning on the walking path and was fine with us just passing by. It is a small zoo, but allows you to get up close. Fun time.
  • This zoo was so intimate. We are and have been members of the Philadelphia Zoo for years and love it. Brevard is much different experience and my whole family loved it. My favorite part was feeding the giraffes! Highly recommend! I will go back.
