Brevard Zoo, Melbourne

4.6
With boardwalks that bring you up to the height of a giraffe's head, Brevard Zoo offers an amazing opportunity to see the black-tongued creatures up close, to pet and feed them, and to be photographed with them. This smallish zoo has more than 650 animals, including multicolored lorikeets (like parrots) you can feed and that may sit on your shoulders. Paddle through the wetlands on a nice, easy kayak ride that gives a different look at many parts of the zoo and its inhabitants. Hop on the Cape to Cairo Express, a train that takes you around Lemur Island, where you can see dromedaries, ostriches, and scimitar oryxes--a species that is extinct in the wild. The zoo is divided into five main areas: Africa, Australasia, Wild Florida, La Selva (the wilderness of South America), and Paws on Play, which has a petting zoo, an aquarium, a pizzeria, and more. If you like zoos but dread the idea of an all-day affair with too much walking, this smaller zoo will appeal to you. If you're a member of another zoo, bring your card and ask if this one has reciprocal admission. • If you have a spare half-day and do not want to spend a ton of money - this is the place! One of the nicest kid-friendly zoos I have ever visited. Enjoy the beautiful zoo, with splash area, kid's...  more »
  • Best zoo I have been to in a long time. Worth the visit. Go early though. Get's very busy. Parking is limited. Kind of pricey but animals seem to be well taken care of. Don't go during summer months.  more »
  • Perfect example that creative interactivity can beat size of space and collection. The giraffe feeding platform and kayaking experience were delightful.  more »

  • It's always great here at the zoo. I love the new rocking chairs. I really enjoyed seeing the new bear exhibit as well. I think the nursing area near the splash pool is an interesting idea. But as a nursing mother all I can think of is ticks and spiders in that little overgrown area they tucked it into. I recommend trimming away all the close sitting underbrush and putting the chairs away from the plants. Maybe put in some bamboo for a natural privacy screen. Maybe tuck a couple of those neat rocking chairs in there. That being said, I never felt uncomfortable nursing pretty much anywhere in the zoo. But I know some baby's and Mama's need more privacy to get things going.
  • Excellent experience. We came here on a whim just because we wanted something new to do. It was well worth the hour drive. There is a lot to do and see for all ages. Feeding the birds, feeding the giraffes, riding the train, and FEEDING the STINGRAYS!! That was such an awesome experience. You’ll love all the areas and animals this place has. It is pretty cheap compared to other zoos in Florida too. You should definitely give it a shot if you’re looking for an inexpensive experience for all ages.
  • I love this zoo! A good variety of animals and they all look very happy and well cared for. The animals are always active too! Lots of kids activities and a very nice kid area with a swimming area, play ground, and petting zoo. The zoo has a very tropical feel with lots of shade. Always a great time!
  • This has to he one of the best zoos in Florida. Every volunteer, staff worker, and administrator genuinely love animals and most importantly their well being. As a first time visitor, thank you all for the professionalism and friendliness you all had towards me and my family. I hope this zoo has continued success.
  • I LOVE this zoo for a few reasons... it's small enough for kids to get through rather quickly . Two hours and you can see everything and then you can let little ones cool off in the splash zone. They have one of the best giraffe exhibits in South Florida. They have a food cafe and dipping dots stations as well. Took one star off only because needs a little improvement some exhibits made kids sad didn't seem like animals had enough space.
