Brevard Zoo, Melbourne

(4.5/5 based on 1,700+ reviews on the web)
With boardwalks that bring you up to the height of a giraffe's head, Brevard Zoo offers an amazing opportunity to see the black-tongued creatures up close, to pet and feed them, and to be photographed with them. This smallish zoo has more than 650 animals, including multicolored lorikeets (like parrots) you can feed and that may sit on your shoulders. Paddle through the wetlands on a nice, easy kayak ride that gives a different look at many parts of the zoo and its inhabitants. Hop on the Cape to Cairo Express, a train that takes you around Lemur Island, where you can see dromedaries, ostriches, and scimitar oryxes--a species that is extinct in the wild. The zoo is divided into five main areas: Africa, Australasia, Wild Florida, La Selva (the wilderness of South America), and Paws on Play, which has a petting zoo, an aquarium, a pizzeria, and more. If you like zoos but dread the idea of an all-day affair with too much walking, this smaller zoo will appeal to you. If you're a member of another zoo, bring your card and ask if this one has reciprocal admission. • It seems the locals LOVE this zoo and there is good reason. It's a nice place to wander around with kids without fear they will wander too far from you. There is a pretty strict boardwalk to follow ar...  more »
  • It's really a nice place but very small as far as zoos go. Limited animal environment displays but they do have a treetop line course and a lagoon with paddle boats and kayaks.

  • Great zoo. Compact layout that makes it quick and easy to get to the sections you are interested in, but still plenty of things to see. The animals seem to be well taken care of. They also have a lot of things to keep small children entertained.
  • A big little zoo! If you have young children, I recommend a zoo membership. Parking is free. I suggest eating lunch before or after your visit and saving the snack bar just for ice cream, drinks. The food is just ok but the eating area is not clean and birds will flock to you for food. There is a train ride-check the schedule so you can plan your day. There is kayaking for ages 5 and up, paddle boats with no age restriction and a zip line (check with zoo for requirements). Bring a bathing suit, towel, change of clothes for the wading pools which need an update but are clean and will certainly cool you off on a hot Florida day and is a great way to conclude your visit. Have fun!
  • Great Day Out For The Whole Family. Staff Are Very Pleasant And Polite. The Giraffes Eat Biscuits Right Out Of Your Hand! Very Entertaining For The Children.
  • Love this zoo! We could spend so many hours here and the kiddie pool area is great! Not a loud intimidating splash park so my kids really enjoyed it.
  • Small zoo done right. The staff seem extremely knowledgeable in all the animals. The obsticle course is well done and the staff are very helpful. I enjoy going regularly. Its very relaxing.
