Honolua Bay, Maui
(4.5/5 based on 550+ reviews on the web)
The powerful waves of Honolua Bay are known worldwide for providing fantastic surfing conditions in winter. You can take lessons as a beginner, but the waves can be dangerous, so follow safety guidelines. With a small, rocky shore, the bay isn't ideal for sunbathing, but when the surf is calm, you can try your hand at snorkeling and scuba diving. As part of the Mokulei Marine Life Conservation District, this protected area is home to many fish and coral reefs. Hike up to the top of the bluffs for views of the bay from above and to watch the surfing pros in action. • We have been going to Maui every year for 22 years, and snorkeling is one of our priorities. We have snorkeled everywhere, Black Rock, Molokini, Lana'i, Ah'hihi, Maluaka on and on. But this is the pla...  more »

  • Cool spot for some great snorkeling. My suggestion is to swim out to the far right of the cove and that's where you will see the most sea life. I saw lots of turtles when I swam out.
  • Best shore access snorkling in Maui. However, boat tours are there starting at about 8am every day, so either go very early, or later in the day (4pm). Please respect the private property and stay on the east (right) side of the bay. You will need to swim out 100 yards or so to reach the reef, but well worth it. It is also worth noting that the bay gets fresh water runoff, which creates a layer of often cloudy fresh water on top of the seawater. This can sometimes impact visability. Don't judge the snorkling by the immediate area next to the beach area. Lazy people will not be rewarded at this amazing place!
  • Came here with Teralani Sailing for snorkeling tour. The water is very calm here, and temperature is just right. Saw sea turtles and numerous fish. Water was a bit cloudy, so couldn't see very far.
  • The snorkeling is amazing, but my favorite thing is the canopy of trees to the East of the bay. It's like you're in the movie Avatar. There's small trails through the middle that you can take and explore.
  • The trail to access the bay is gorgeous! Lots of chicken running around. We went on a rainy day and it was quite muddy and the bay was all brown. Was still worth it just for the short walk through the forest.
