Categories: Wildlife Areas, Nature & Parks
Inspirock Rating:
4.4/5 based on 550+ reviews on the web
The powerful waves of Honolua Bay are known worldwide for providing fantastic surfing conditions in winter. You can take lessons as a beginner, but the waves can be dangerous, so follow safety guidelines. With a small, rocky shore, the bay isn't ideal for sunbathing, but when the surf is calm, you can try your hand at snorkeling and scuba diving. As part of the Mokulei Marine Life Conservation District, this protected area is home to many fish and coral reefs. Hike up to the top of the bluffs for views of the bay from above and to watch the surfing pros in action. • This is a gorgeous bay. But the entrance is extremely rocky and the visibility was awful the day we were there. An experience none the less. Parking can be a bit trying.
  • This place is a fantastic destination to go snorkeling! Huge reef! Just make sure to go on days when the water is clear. You don't have to pay for the snorkel tour to get here. You can drive up and wa...  read more »
  • I love the jungle walk down to the bay. That alone is worth the trip. Because of the boulders it is difficult to get in and out of the water, The water here can be the best in the world or a total mis...  read more »
  • Best shore access snorkling in Maui. However, boat tours are there starting at about 8am every day, so either go very early, or later in the day (4pm). Please respect the private property and stay on the east (right) side of the bay. You will need to swim out 100 yards or so to reach the reef, but well worth it. It is also worth noting that the bay gets fresh water runoff, which creates a layer of often cloudy fresh water on top of the seawater. This can sometimes impact visability. Don't judge the snorkling by the immediate area next to the beach area. Lazy people will not be rewarded at this amazing place!
  • Came here with Teralani Sailing for snorkeling tour. The water is very calm here, and temperature is just right. Saw sea turtles and numerous fish. Water was a bit cloudy, so couldn't see very far.
  • It was a nice and calm bay today. We saw 6 turtles! It's about a 5 minute walk from parking to the rocky beach. We brought beach chairs and they worked perfect. It was the most beautiful walk to the beach we have seen so far and spent the afternoon in the shade chilling with some chickens!
  • Honolua Bay is an incredibly beautiful place so PLEASE be respectful of all that makes it so beautiful. Try and not wear sunscreen and then get into the water as the sunscreen destroys the reefs. Also, enjoy the sea life especially the Honu (green sea turtles) but give them their distance. Often, you see idiot tourists trying to touch them or harass them by swimming way too close. As tourists, let's be respectful of the land, the amazing wildlife and the people that call Maui home. It truly is a piece of heaven on earth.
  • Not worth it! Very long drive. The view is nice from the hill. However we went snorkeling in the afternoon and it was terrible! The water was dirt and you couldn't see your fins. You access through a private property full of chickens.
