Ballona Creek, Marina del Rey
Categories: Jogging Paths, Outdoor Activities
Ballona Creek is an 8.8mi waterway in southwestern Los Angeles County, California, whose watershed drains the Los Angeles basin, from the Santa Monica Mountains on the north, the Harbor Freeway (I-110) on the east, and the Baldwin Hills on the south. It heads in the historical Rancho Las Cienegas and flows through Culver City and the Del Rey district before emptying into Santa Monica Bay between Marina del Rey and the Playa del Rey district.HistoryDuring the Pre-Columbian era, Tongva people existed as hunters and gatherers in small villages throughout the Ballona Creek watershed and other parts of the Los Angeles basin. Native American culture faded with the arrival of Spanish explorers. In 1769, the Tongva met their first Europeans when Portola expedition came through on its way north. Continuing west after crossing the Los Angeles River, diarist Fray Juan Crespi noted that the party "came across a grove of very large alders...from which flows a stream of water...The water flowed afterwards in a deep channel towards the southwest". Researchers identified the place as the headwaters of Ballona Creek. The explorers made camp nearby on August 3.Using our international travel planner, Marina del Rey attractions like Ballona Creek can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

Jakież było moje zdziwienie, gdy okazało się, iż znaki zakazują wstępu pieszym. Byłam nieźle zmartwiona, gdyż potrzebowałam się przedostać piechotą w kierunku Santa Monica. Mimo to, zaryzykowałam. Despite this, zaryzykowałam. The road is actually designed for bikes and joggers, few people spacerowało there on foot and a little scared of these rozpędzonych cyclists, but I had no choice. The route is quite boring and monotonous, there is little you can watch. The only thing worth mentioning is that the route is a water reserve, the Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reservat, with unique flora and fauna, however, in the more humid times of the year. Out of everything and it was dried up. The area is fenced and protected.show original

8 miles one way down the Balona Creek waterway. Other than the enormous amounts of trash you see in the water and shoreline in places its a good ride. After the ride you will never drink another thing... read more »
My favorite views of the marina here... The jetty walk makes for a great weekend outing with the kids and dog.
A bicycle and pedestrian bridge! Connecting the long bike path which goes from Redondo Beach to Playa del Rey, thru the bridge, around the marina, through Venice Beach and up to Santa Monica! For pedestrians, parking may be found right near the bridge or around the nearby Del Rey Park or at the south end of Marina Del Rey. A great spot to take in the views of ocean, city and passing boats through the channel Those who venture along the narrow pathway NE beyond the bridge can expect to hear the voices of bicyclists and skaters warning to overtake...."on your left!" so please give adequate room for them to get by!
