Vermillion Cliffs Scenic Highway, Marble Canyon

(4.8/5 based on 100+ reviews on the web)
Vermilion Cliffs National Monument is located in Arizona, immediately south of the Utah state line. This National Monument, 293,689acres in area, protects the Paria Plateau, Vermilion Cliffs, Coyote Buttes, and Paria Canyon. Elevations in the Monument range from 3,100 feet to 6,500 feet above sea level (944 to 1,981 meters).Creation and designationEstablished on November 9, 2000 by a presidential proclamation by President Bill Clinton, Vermilion Cliffs National Monument was carved from existing lands already under the management of the U.S. Government in extreme northern Coconino County, Arizona, immediately south of the border with the state of Utah. The monument is administered by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, an agency within the U.S. Department of the Interior. The Vermilion Cliffs themselves run along the southern and eastern edges of this National Monument. Much of the Monument's land consists of the Paria Plateau, a flat area extending northward from the tops of the cliffs.Vermilion CliffsThe Vermilion Cliffs are steep eroded escarpments consisting primarily of sandstone, siltstone, limestone, and shale which rise as much as above their bases. These sedimentary rocks have been deeply eroded for millions of years, exposing hundreds of layers of richly colored rock strata. Mesas, buttes, and large tablelands are interspersed with steep canyons, where some small streams provide enough moisture to support a sampling of wildlife.

  • We did this drive in poor weather so were unable to see the cliffs at their best. For part of the way the cliffs were obscured by low cloud. On a sunny day they would obviously be more spectacular.  more »
  • Absolutely stunning drive. The bridge across the Colorado was especially awesome. We went out of our way to stay in marble canyon for a night and the drive itself made it very worth it! Kids loved it....  more »
  • It's about a 10-mile drive near the base of the cliffs. You'll probably drive it both ways, unless you are going all the way to Kanab. Worth a detour.  more »

  • So beautiful, just driving through you are rewarded for miles with breathtaking views. I only got to explore a little, but I will def be back for more. Make sure you bring snacks with you and lots of water.
  • Didn't make it all the way in, but the surroundings were worth it too!
  • Incredible Rock formations sculptured by Nature.

  • We were looking for Lake Powell and somehow ended up here. It was a very pleasant mistake. This part of Arizona was beautiful. Next time we come back we are going to be looking for slot canyons
