Convict Lake, Mammoth Lakes

4.7
#2 of 8 in Nature in Mammoth Lakes
Convict Lake is a lake in the Sherwin Range of the Sierra Nevada in California, United States. It is known for its fishing and the dramatic mountains (including Mount Morrison) that surround the lake. Its surface lies at an elevation of 7850ft.The lake was named after an incident on September 23, 1871, where a group of convicts escaped from prison in Carson City. A posse, from Benton, led by Deputy Sheriff George Hightower, encountered the convicts near the head of what is now Convict Creek. Posse member Robert Morrison, a Benton merchant and Wells Fargo Agent, was killed in the encounter, and Mount Morrison was named after him. It has frequently been noted on lists of unusual place names.RecreationConvict Lake is known for its fishing, including Rainbow trout, German brown trout, and a species of sucker fish. Due to the high demand of fishing in the lake and stream, the lake is stocked once a week during the summer with rainbow trout, supplied by nearby hatcheries. There is a three-mile trail for hiking around the lake and a trail that connects the lake to the Sierra Crest.

  • Another beautiful location along the 395 literally steps from the road but immediately you feel away from it all. Great place to fish, picnic or just bask in the beauty of the Eastern Sierras.
  • Fished the lake, climbed Mount Morrison, and witnessed a close friend get married on it's shores. Unbelievable place. The Sierras are pure magic.
  • Another easy, and extraordinarily beautiful, spot right off 395. There’s about a 3 mile walk around the lake, but there’s plenty to see and explore without doing the whole loop.
  • Beautiful. Very clear and green. Nice hike around the lake. Saw plenty of people fishing when I visited, I had a brisk swim to the center. This lake has a historical story behind it, it's a great place to unwind your mind and your fishing pole.
  • Absolutely beautiful place. The water is crystal clear. If you are brave, go for a swim (it gets better after 20-30 seconds in the water). The fishermen are a little touchy and bossy about "scaring the fish." But the shoreline is full of tangles of fishing line, a danger to all the wildlife that lives there. If you have time, like I did, pick up all the tangles of fishing line that you see and throw it in the garbage cans. The campground sites are small and really close to each other, and $25! I had a neighbor with 2 vehicles (from Florida) that returned to their site at 2am in the morning, and started making a fire, flashing car lights and overall unprepared for a freezing night. I got beautiful photos, but I don't plan on camping here again (would like to try one of the cabins though). Haven't eaten at the restaurants, but my parents did and wouldn't stop raving about how good it was.
