Nolin Lake State Park, Mammoth Cave

#29 of 39 in Nature in Kentucky
In May 2001, Nolin Lake State Park opened to the public. The 5,795-acre lake, created from the impoundment of the Nolin River in 1963, and the 333-acre park are located along the northern edge of Mammoth Cave National Park in Edmonson County. Nolin Lake State Park is the perfect escape, featuring 32 campsites with hookups for water and electricity, 40 primitive campsites, a beach, a boat ramp, shower and laundry facilities, a playground, and around 9 miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking. Nolin Lake provides great fishing for guests as well, with an abundance of bass, catfish, crappie, and walleye.

The area surrounding Nolin Lake State Park is topographically diverse. From the Great Sinkhole Plain in the south to the Dripping Springs Escarpment in the north, and from the peaks of tall hills to the Nolin River and Green River valleys, Edmonson County is an astoundingly beautiful place. Named for Captain John Edmonson of Virginia, who was killed at the Battle of the River Raisin during the War of 1812, Edmonson County is part of "cave country" and is home to Mammoth Cave, the longest known cave system in the world. Since opening for tours in 1816, millions of visitors have come to explore the more than 400 miles of known cave passages. Established in 1941, Mammoth Cave National Park now covers 53,000 acres across three counties: Edmonson, Hart, and Barren.

  • I brought my three kids (11,9,7) and tent-camped at Nolin Lake State Park. The entire campground is clean and quiet. The camp staff was nice and helpful. The bathhouse had 3 or 4 shower stalls in each...  more »
  • Spent quality time on the lake which was like glass. We saw at least 10 blue herons in the lake, and several on land. The temp was great, nobody there this time of year. Had 5 cabins in a row for our ...  more »
  • It was April when we camped here and it has been one of the best camping spots. Clean and level spots with a place to hang your garbage. Spacious sites on pea gravel so if it had rained there was no mud mess. The lake is big and has beautiful scenery. You can see it from some sites and walk from one and sit on the rocky shore. I would go back. I only wish I had pictures to share.
  • We go every summer as we live approx 45 min away. The first time we camped there we put up our tent in an RV site. Allot more space then tent sites.. To much to do at this lake.. You'll absolutely love camping here if your on a trip and need a place cheap to camp.
  • Best maintained park we have ever stayed at. Level sites, ample room, access excellent. Facilities and staff top shelf. We will be back.
  • Our first camping trip at Nolin Lake State Park campground, it will not be our last. The campground was clean, quiet and large enough(approx. 30 sites). The bathhouse was very clean. The campground host was friendly and made rounds a couple times a day. We camped on site #21 with our 43' fifth wheel. It was easy to back into with plenty of parking space for our tow vehicle. Highly recommend giving this campground a try. WE'LL BE BACK👍👍👍
  • We will definitely be making a yearly camping trip to Nolin now. What a beautiful state park. Very relaxing, clean bath houses, beautiful sites, and friendly staff.
