Tourist Spot Arena / Stadium
The Kohl Center is an arena and athletic center at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, United States. The building, which opened in 1998, is the home of the university's men's basketball and ice hockey teams, and the women's basketball team. It also housed the university's women's ice hockey team through 2012, after which they moved into the adjacent LaBahn Arena. Seating capacity is variable, as the center can be rearranged to accommodate a basketball court, a hockey rink, or a concert. The maximum capacity is 17,230 in its basketball configuration, and 15,359 for ice hockey. The center has three levels, with the floor holding about 7,500 people, and the two upper balconies about 4,500 each. It is the second largest indoor venue in Wisconsin and the largest outside Milwaukee. The arena is located on the southeast corner of the UW–Madison campus, at the intersection of West Dayton and North Frances Streets.NamingThe sporting arena is named after former United States Senator and Milwaukee Bucks owner Herb Kohl, who donated $25 million of his Kohl's department/grocery store fortune to the building project. At the time it was the largest single donation in University of Wisconsin System history. Because of the donor's first name, it is sometimes locally referred to as the "Herb Garden". Former Wisconsin Badgers basketball player Albert Nicholas and his wife donated $10 million toward the project, with the adjoining practice pavilion named the Nicholas-Johnson Pavilion and Plaza. Jack F. Kellner and his sons donated an additional $2.5 million to the project. Wisconsin-based Hammes Company developed the arena for UW–Madison in 1993. The Boldt Company was the project's general contractor.

  • Great view from any seat. I think that the 3rd tier is very underrated for basketball. Basketball tickets are a little expensive for B1G games, but that's expected since given the team's recent success as of this post. Great environment and good wifi.
  • Great location for college sporting events. Very easy venue to find your way around. A lot of restrooms available for the masses of people attending events. Only complaint was that it was difficult to walk anywhere during a break in the action because lines for food stands clogged the walkways. Would be helpful if they would get stantions to direct lines and keep lines of people out of main walkway.
  • The kohl center is great! It has great seating so even if you're super high up you can still see the game, and great audio quality! The only thing wrong is that food and drinks are super expensive.
  • It would really help if there were escalators in the building. Right after games get done there is major congestion at the staircases. Food and beverage are pretty expensive. There is a good view from most seats though.
  • Very easy and fast through the doors. They do have metal detectors you have to walk through when entering. Very easy to find seats and a great food selection

Where to stay in Madison

The university and state politics draw a constant stream of visitors to Madison, so you'll find a wide range of accommodations in the city. Numerous hotels circle the campus, and some of these overlook Lake Mendota. Moving onto the isthmus between Lake Mendota and Lake Monona, you'll find a handful of charming inns and bed and breakfasts, most of which offer panoramic views of the water. Areas south of Lake Monona feature national chain hotels and motels. These sit farther away from the action around campus and the State Capitol Building, but they can also offer water views and quiet settings near some of Madison's many parks.
