Kohl Center, Madison

4.4
The Kohl Center is an arena and athletic center at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, United States. The building, which opened in 1998, is the home of the university's men's basketball and ice hockey teams, and the women's basketball team. It also housed the university's women's ice hockey team through 2012, after which they moved into the adjacent LaBahn Arena. Seating capacity is variable, as the center can be rearranged to accommodate a basketball court, a hockey rink, or a concert. The maximum capacity is 17,230 in its basketball configuration, and 15,359 for ice hockey. The center has three levels, with the floor holding about 7,500 people, and the two upper balconies about 4,500 each. It is the second largest indoor venue in Wisconsin and the largest outside Milwaukee. The arena is located on the southeast corner of the UW–Madison campus, at the intersection of West Dayton and North Frances Streets.NamingThe sporting arena is named after former United States Senator and Milwaukee Bucks owner Herb Kohl, who donated $25 million of his Kohl's department/grocery store fortune to the building project. At the time it was the largest single donation in University of Wisconsin System history. Because of the donor's first name, it is sometimes locally referred to as the "Herb Garden". Former Wisconsin Badgers basketball player Albert Nicholas and his wife donated $10 million toward the project, with the adjoining practice pavilion named the Nicholas-Johnson Pavilion and Plaza. Jack F. Kellner and his sons donated an additional $2.5 million to the project. Wisconsin-based Hammes Company developed the arena for UW–Madison in 1993. The Boldt Company was the project's general contractor.

  • Beautiful building with very easy access (parking is awful but that's Madison). Very easy to get around in however some of the seats are a little tricky to get into. Overall very nice.  more »

  • The Kohl Center is a pretty basic facility, but I give credit to its management for continuing to find ways to improve the fan experience. The concession options are truly sub-par, there’s no alcohol served, the seats so-so in comfort and there’s no dedicated parking. The bathroom facilities get crowded at breaks, but kept remarkably clean, given the volume of fans using them. The security staff does a decent job getting fans through the metal detectors before the game. Kudos to the UW for the recent upgrade to the video scoreboard, whose crystal-clear screens can be easily seen from any seat in the stadium. And the recent addition of graphics that can be projected on the court was appreciated as well. With all that said, I do love the Kohl Center. The student section is often as entertaining as the team on the floor and there always some activity going on during the breaks to keep the crowd engaged. And there’s nothing like the electricity of a Kohl Center crowd when a close game is on the line.
  • Hi, The Kohl Center is great. When I graduated from West High School the graduation ceremony was here. Also, I love the Wisconsin Badgers and a lot of the teams play here.
  • I've been going to Wisconsin Badger games since I was was 4 years old and my father has had season tickets since the early 80's at the field house and now Kohl Center. Not only do they provide a great atmosphere for both Basketball and Hockey, but they also make improvements around the arena every season. Most notably to the jumbotron and the player introductions. As far as as the concession prices go they are pretty typical although as I have been going for over 20 years the prices of drinks go up almost every season. But you go for the experience not the food. No matter how many times I go I still get goosebumps during the opening pump up video. Whether you are a Badger fan or not this facility goes a long way to making your experience great.
  • This is a very big building. Three stories and lots of stairs. There are concessions there and shops around the outside of the arena. You're not allowed to bring bags in or almost anything besides phones chargers and keys.
  • Never a bad veiw/seat. Huge scoreboard. And awesome service and friendly people.
