Where to stay in Madison

The university and state politics draw a constant stream of visitors to Madison, so you'll find a wide range of accommodations in the city. Numerous hotels circle the campus, and some of these overlook Lake Mendota. Moving onto the isthmus between Lake Mendota and Lake Monona, you'll find a handful of charming inns and bed and breakfasts, most of which offer panoramic views of the water. Areas south of Lake Monona feature national chain hotels and motels. These sit farther away from the action around campus and the State Capitol Building, but they can also offer water views and quiet settings near some of Madison's many parks.

  • This is a small size museum run by the UW-Madison but has a rich collection of art objects from around the world. Has very old art objects from cradles of civilisation such as India, China, Egypt etc....  more »
  • A free museum in the center of the Univ campus. The collection ranges from Dutch masters to contemporary art, sculpture, ceramics and glassware. It is never a disappointment.  more »
  • This beautiful museum has a varied and impressive collection. It makes a nice stop if you want a break from the hustle and bustle of downtown Madison. Best of all it's free. Oh, don't forget the gift ...  more »

  • I can't overstate how impressed I am with the collection. The variety means there is something for everyone: historical artifacts, paintings from many times and places, mixed media, sculptures, even an original Grant Wood. The changing showroom also features artists from around the world, and provides something fresh to repeat visitors. My only complaint is that they make visitors put all of their bags in tiny lockers and then guards will hover near you. I guess they have a lot of valuable art to protect, but other galleries I've visited have never had such a tense atmosphere.
  • Always interesting exhibitions there. They have a coatroom with lockers. Lockers are 25 cents, but if you don't have a quarter ask the guards are the front desk. They have a cup of quarters specifically for this. (the quarter is returned when to retrieve your stuff - be sure to return the quarter to the community cup!)
  • A couple of weeks ago I had visited this Art Museum, it was my first time here. Very nice museum with a very large collection of a variety of different types of artwork. There are two parts to the museum, the newer addition and the original museum. Allow a couple of hours to see the entire museum and grab a map at the front desk and go exploring. The museum offers different events each month, recommend checking their event calendar for upcoming events. Admission is free. Recommend parking in one of the Parking ramps near the museum.
  • Great collection of art. Very close to the Lake St. parking ramp. Best of all, it's free!
  • Great art. Very modern. I would not recommend this place to kids, but anyone 16+ who has an appreciation for some weirder arts.
