Colonial Michilimackinac, Mackinaw City

#1 of 6 in Museums in Mackinaw City
Experience American history along the Great Lakes by stepping into a recreation of the 18th-century French trading village at Colonial Michilimackinac. This Michigan state park is home to Fort Michilimackinac, a National Historic Landmark and open-air museum of the trading post that was built along the shore in 1715. Take a tour of this historical site, watch one of the reenactments that brings the old village to life--such as the 1770s' British occupation and the American Revolutionary War--and view collections of excavated objects from the region. You'll also find many hiking and biking trails nearby. To find out how to plan a trip to Mackinaw City, use our trip itinerary maker.

  • A nice place to stroll. Much was closed for the season already. The area is beautiful and well-maintained.  more »
  • We visited in late October, so not much going on. It is nice to walk the grounds: however, the buildings are closed.  more »
  • What a name we have here .. Michilimackinac !! This is actually a very large area at the extreme uppermost point of Michigan's lower peninsula. You have a good many things to see and to do in this Col...  more »

  • Wonderful historical reconstruction and museum. Well worth the $12 entry fee. If you're interested in history, particularly the history of the fur trade, this is an amazing historical site. The buildings are all reconstructions of the buildings that were at the fort before the British took it down and moved it to Mackinac Island. If you get the chance, take the history tour with Greg - he's dressed as a British Army grenadier (you can't miss his hat) - he has a terrific understanding of the history of the fort as well as the fur trade for which the fort was built.
  • We thought it was expensive but we didn't understand all that was there. It was great, lots of history and interactivity. We especially liked the muskets being fired. Everyone there was friendly, helpful, and informative. If you are in Mackinaw for a day it's a must. Give yourself lots of time, since there is so much to see and do.
  • Wonderful historic exhibits and period actors/interpreters! Always a great stop! They also have a good play set for the kids to burn off some energy! Don't miss the blacksmith or the cannon firing!
  • Very easy to find, with good parking. The bathrooms are clean and accessible. The cost is low and you can walk through it fast or spend half a day here.
  • History comes alive at Colonial Michilimackinac! A great place for kids to explore history and ask questions. Very family-friendly.
