Fort Holmes, Mackinac Island

#3 of 7 in Historic Sites in Mackinac Island
Historic Site · Hidden Gem · Landmark
Sitting atop the highest ridge on the island, Fort Holmes represents the reconstruction of an early 19th-century wood and earthen fort and one of few War of 1812 historic sites in Michigan. Notice the loopholes on the hewn log structure once used for musket and cannon fire. The hike up hill takes a bit of effort, but the scenic vistas of the Straits of Mackinac make it well worth. • Dating back to the time of the American Revolution and before, this place oozes with history and authenticity.  more »
  • Lots of history there. They rebuilt it to great shape. We were able to ride our bike there for a great view on that side of the island.  more »
  • We found this by riding our bikes around. It is was closed when we were there but it was still worth looking around and reading the signs. If you like History it is worth the stop  more »
  • Small Historical landmark on the highest point of Mackinac Island. It's just a reconstruct of an old fort, I did not get much from internal fort design. But magnificent views from there. Seriously, it offers the best view on the island. It was a good hike up to the Fort Holmes.
  • Unique fort. And the location of this fort is supposedly the highest point of the island (at least that's what I was told). Pretty nice views from this place. But ironically, at around 3 PM on a Saturday afternoon, I was the only person in and around the fort. I would definitely recommend this place, just for the views and for the fact that it is the highest point on the island and the history behind the fort.
  • Incredible views from highest point on the island. It is well worth the hike to get there. The maps that we had didn't show a bathroom there but there is a composting toilet.
  • Love what has been done to renovate this area over the past few years. Still one of the best places to overlook the straits and watch freighters come past the island.
  • 207 steps to the top! A decent workout for a splendid view! Fairly unspoiled, but sad to see garbage littering the path to the top.
