Arch Rock, Mackinac Island

Categories: Geologic Formations, Nature & Parks
Inspirock Rating:
4.7/5 based on 1,500+ reviews on the web
A natural limestone arch in Mackinac Island State Park, Arch Rock stands 45 m (146 ft) above Lake Huron. The arch, which was created after the end of the Wisconsin glacial episode, forms a perfect window through which to view the lake. Because the sediment forming the arch is not ideal for creating natural bridges, this particular arch is uncommon in the region. Native Americans saw the arch as a place of divine power and based many stories and legends around it. To get here, you can walk or bike the trails, or take a ride in a horse-drawn carriage. • If you enjoy nature and a gorgeous lakeside view, come check out this natural wonder. Easy access by horse drawn tours. Lots of great hiking trails nearby as well.
  • Great stories of the Indian Folklore to describe how the rock was formed. It is just amazing to look at.
  • There are always lots of people here - it is amazing to see the formation still standing after all these years - most of the time there are cute messages in the water below - definitely a must stop an...  read more »
  • It's a rock, but it's pretty cool and definitely worth checking out. If you take the carriage ride, you will stop by here for a few minutes. As our carriage driver put it "There are tons of pictures of Arch Rock on the internet, but none with you in them!". Take a few minutes and go see Arch Rock, you won't regret it. It was also a major reason why the park was granted state park status. See it from the top and then take a bicycle ride around the island to see it from the bottom.
  • I've been to the island a few times but never took the time to go. It's much closer than I thought. Made a few stops on the way like skull cave. Smooth paved trails one way some has stairs the other has a big hill to climb. Paved trials/roads kids enjoyed it as well. We enjoyed the walk both ways to it.
  • Amazing location, easy hike with kids via paved roads or by bike. Gorgeous view that doesn't disappoint. Many people taking pictures at the actual rock, less crowded on the trails.
  • Worth the walk. The shortest path to reach here is to climb lot of stairs. We had a toddler sleeping in stroller so we took a uphill walk instead of stairs. You can see the different colors of water from here
  • Beautiful spot, one of those must-sees for first time visitors. But I'm a 30-or-so-time visitor, and I still go and see it on my yearly trips to the island. You can get great pictures of it from lake level or from the carriage drop off point. If not taking the carriage tour (it's not that far to Arch Rock, so you don't need to), there is a nice path that runs through the woods from the intersection just east of the fort to it.
