Arch Rock, Mackinac Island

Must see · Geologic Formation · Nature / Park
A natural limestone arch in Mackinac Island State Park, Arch Rock stands 45 m (146 ft) above Lake Huron. The arch, which was created after the end of the Wisconsin glacial episode, forms a perfect window through which to view the lake. Because the sediment forming the arch is not ideal for creating natural bridges, this particular arch is uncommon in the region. Native Americans saw the arch as a place of divine power and based many stories and legends around it. To get here, you can walk or bike the trails, or take a ride in a horse-drawn carriage. • Natural wonder of Mackinac. We saw this on the horse and carriage ride we took while visiting the island. Cool photo spot.  more »
  • We enjoyed the view from the walkway of the coastline as well as this beautiful rock formation. The walkway can get slippery when it is wet.  more »
  • We took a tour of the island, and the Arch Rock is a must see. I loved it. The tour director drove the horse and was so knowledgeable. I learned a lot of history.  more »

  • The view is just amazing! The first time I saw photos of the arch rock online I was pretty sure they were edited. The photos I'm uploading are not edited and the water is as blue as on the other pictures. There are many spots for beautiful photos and the beach downstairs is also very nice! If you do a self guided tour with the bicycle, you should definitely stop here.
  • This is an absolutely must see view! The water color is gorgeous and well worth the 207 steps. I'm not a fan of the climb and personally hate the stairs, but this view makes it all worth it. You can take a carriage ride there and I would definitely recommend that option for those with mobility limitations. Just gorgeous!!!
  • Looking through it and seeing a paved pathway right next to the lake water. Imagine if you could set up a photo shoot with you looking up, framed by the arch, "one of a kind". Standing on top and trying to see across the lake, very high, and seeing forever. Definitely not for the weak-kneed people. There are rails to hang on to, so don't give up or you'll miss a one of a kind view.
  • A natural rock arch soaring 149 feet above the Straits of Mackinac. The view to the lake water is amazing. It’s one of the stops of carriage ride or 207 steps to climb from the road. Either way it’s worth it.
  • A picture may not capture or justify how beautiful the view of the lake from the Arch rock is! I bet that a hike using the steps to get to this spectacular rock formation would definitely be worth. It's awe inspiring how this wonder was carved out by the lake and definitely one of the best spots and also a good sunset point on the Mackinac island. Don't miss it!
