Cemetery Garden
The Old City Cemetery, established in 1806, is one of the oldest public cemeteries in the United States still in use today. Mayors and other prominent civic leaders, along with the city’s indigent and “strangers,” are among the estimated 15,000 people buried here. Two thirds of those interred here are of African descent, both enslaved and free. The cemetery’s Confederate section contains the graves of more than 2,200 soldiers from 14 states. Museums on the property interpret the diverse history of this rehabilitated graveyard and its inhabitants. Today, Old City Cemetery is the most visited historic site in the City of Lynchburg and is Central Virginia’s most unique public garden. It is a Virginia Historic Landmark on the National Register of Historic Places.

  • What a historical and interesting cemetery. I thought that this would be a quick in and out visit but ended up spending the better part of 3-hours visiting. The Old City Cemetery was founded in 1806 a...  more »
  • Enjoyed our visit, but will be going back once roses bloom. Enjoyed lunch in gazebo (please clean up after yourself). It is part of our history we hope they will never remove or disturb.  more »
  • Fascinating old cemetery. Beautiful botanicals. Nicely kept grounds. Not much in the way of famous people, but that wasn't a big take away. Delightful shop keeper at the gift store.  more »

  • Not only are there so many founders of the Sacramento Region buried here - the "old" roses that grow throughout the cemetery are a treat to behold
  • This cemetery is beautiful and well kept. I love coming here and taking photos or just enjoying a relaxing walk.
  • A beautiful and well kept cemetery park with a lot of history. The Chapel is beautiful and has a lot of history all its own. They even have antique roses and goats. Friendly and courteous staff. The centerpiece of this park is definitely the Confederate Section which is the final resting place for over 2200 of our brave soldiers.
  • This place is perfect for a nice leisurely walk where you can enjoy being outdoors or take the history of the grounds.
  • This cemetery is great for history buffs and cemetery lovers alike. The grounds are beautifully kept and there are several museums within.
