Cascade River State Park is a state park near the northeastern tip of Minnesota, USA, on the north shore of Lake Superior. The park is in a rocky and rugged location, and has many different types of wildlife.Cascade River State Park is also connected to the Superior Hiking Trail. The site was originally named Cascade River State Wayside. It was developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps starting around July 1934. One of the projects was a huge overlook wall, built from locally-quarried gabbro. The roadside development plans were drawn by Arthur R. Nichols and Harold E. Olson. The project was considered a model for roadside development within the state, and possibly even outside the state. The development work was supervised and inspected not just by National Park Service employees, but also by members of the Minnesota Highway Department, staff of the Minneapolis Park Board, Civilian Conservation Corps individuals, members of the Minnesota Legislature, and even some Canadian officials. The wayside was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on August 4, 2003.

  • Very nice hiking loop around the falls. Got lots of pictures of the cascades and mushrooms. Getting pictures of salmon spooning was a different plus.
  • Just a wonderful State Park with waterfalls, vistas on the shoreline on Lake Superior and even salmon spawning in the river. Nearby Grand Marais is very nice as well. Eat lunch at the Cascade Lodge ju...  read more »
  • One of my favorite parks, the cascading waterfalls are breathtaking. The hike can get a little challenging for some but if you're sure-footed and don't mind ascending the terrain you will enjoy it here. It's an older park with some steep drop-offs so use caution, especially if you have smaller kids. Be careful of erosion in spots on some of the trails.
  • Stayed at backpack site 5 on Lookout Mountain. It's an easy 1.5 mile hike up, a couple short steep areas but mostly easy hiking and then a beautiful view from the peak. Staying up there at night on a clear night you can see the Milky Way and the moon reflecting off Lake Superior. Absolutely beautiful and worth it
  • Great hiking, beautiful waterfalls and good campsites. Don't come near July 4th. Very easy walk to the lake from main campsites. You can see the mouth of the cascade river. Superior Hiking Trails are great.
  • We camped on Lookout Mountain which is one of the backpacking sites along Superior Hiking Trail. It is about a mile and a half hike to get to the site and the view is amazing. There was a small shelter, picnic table, and enough room for two small tents. I'll go back again in a heartbeat!
  • Another great Minnesota State Park! There's quite a few waterfall sights. Fairly easy terrain for the kids too. If you're in the area, feel free to swing in or stay the night.
