HISTORY:

John and James Merriwether and Leonidas Hardeman in 1874 built gristmill and sawmill at this site, with stone dam across the San Marcos. Bob Innes, John Orchard, J. K. Walker, and Fritz Zedler, as Luling Water Power Co., bought mills (1884), adding cotton gin. A milling veteran, Zedler in 1888 bought all stock and made eldest son partner. The gin, soon burned, was rebuilt. Units were added. Sons Herman and Charles joined firm. In 1890 and later, the Zedlers furnished water to city; 1894 and later, city power. In time various mill units closed; operations ceased about 1960.

  • What a beautiful venue - our friends had their wedding here and even in the high water flood season, even when it poured, the space seemed to stretch and accommodate the large group. The kitchen was wonderful for food prep (bring your own dishes, tools, etc - NOTHING there) and the grounds are lovely.
  • This place is wonderful. It overlooks the river. There is a great outside intimate amphitheater that has big limestone rocks cut into big blocks for the seating ledges. The amphitheater is located below the facility so your family and friends who aren't so mobile have a great view from the top. The grounds are landscaped very nicely. There is a feel of history here mixed with a great facility. The pavilion is four season useable with big window wall sections that roll upward so you can have an open air pavilion or a glass walled enclosed space. It is really beautiful. The original old mill sits closer to the river and is a great photo op spot. The buildings are labeled so it's an interesting stroll and great picnic spot. I am amazed that they are only charging 1/3rd of what they probably should. No wonder it's booked a year in advance. They do have cancellations sometimes though. This is a great small conference center, party and wedding venue and it's close to both San Antonio and Austin. It is not out of reach for Houston either. They even have a house to rent like a bed and rest arrangement which would be great for a wedding party set up. Really a beautiful spot.
  • Beautiful falls and grounds. Good place to take some pics.
  • A hidden treasure. Beautiful history saved for public view and reused for events .
