Civil War veteran Samuel P. Dinsmoor built this visionary art environment, a stone log cabin surrounded by three-story concrete sculptures. His political views take the form of dimensional tableus, a sort of 3D political cartoon, reflecting his Populist Party leanings and Masonic background. Built from 1905 through the 1930s, this National Register of Historic Places site is nationally recognized example of vernacular art and architecture.

  • This was not to my taste at all and I don't think it was worth the drive off the interstate. Pay close attention to the pictures to get a feel for it.

  • A bucket list item finally achieved! Great tour. Nice people. Visionary art. I’ve w been wanting to visit here since I received a gift of a book about this place nearly 50 years ago. Looks pretty much like the photographs taken back then. Well preserved and well maintained. Note- if architectural “follies” are not your thing you may enjoy it only slightly less than I.
  • The lady who guided us was a bit snarky, but the place is super cool. The guide was still informative, just absolutely clear that they closed in an hour, and she was basically just over it all for the day. Garden of Eden is a bit off the beaten path, but worth the stop. Check out the infamous toilets, as well as all the folk art gracing yards all over this tiny, charming, friendly town! Then, hit up Wilson Lake for a bit of sunshine and relaxation on your way back to the highway.
  • If nothing else, this place provokes strong opinions. For that reason alone, it is worth visiting to form your own, rather than adopting someone else's. I'm not sure it is enough to justify a trip on its own, but it is a great example of the roadside kitsch that used to make up a big part of the American travel experience. Combined with the other attractions around Lucas, Cawker City, Wilson, and Lebanon, it is worth a day trip or, if you have the time, a one-day stop as you travel through. That is, if you are in to that kind of thing. I asked my 15-year old daughter what her favorite part of our trip was. Her reply: "The dead body."
  • This was a place I recommend to anyone traveling pass, the art alone in this town the history of S,P, Dinsmoor, the lake, good place to just stretch your legs and have lunch. Well worth it,
  • A little spooky at night (which is free to enter but only the grounds, the house isn't open) but a sight to see none the less!
