The Louisville Zoo, Louisville

4.0
#2 of 9 in Parks in Louisville
Zoo / Aquarium Nature / Park
In 54 hectares (134 acres) of natural setting, The Louisville Zoo houses 1,700 different mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, fish, and invertebrates. This zoo was one of the first ones in the world to introduce rotating exhibits--where animals are moved throughout different habitats in order to have a better quality of life. Stroll through themed exhibits, such as a gorilla forest and a glacier town. See rare animals, such as an albino alligator. Take a train ride, or climb and balance on ropes above the zoo at an attraction for children and families. You can also interact with the zookeepers and learn about the animals. • This is a nice zoo. Unfortunately many animals were not out on exhibit today. There is a nice splash pad for the children which helps out on a hot day. The food prices are way too expensive and the service was poor (but it's mostly young people perhaps working their first job). The exhibits are well designed and the atmosphere is very nice. Overall an enjoyable experience.
  • We LOVE the zoo! My son and daughter would go everyday if we could. It is very clean the staff is super friendly. A really great outdoor outing for the family and some great exercise. We love how the zoo lets you bring in your own lunch and we have a picnic and spend our money in the gift shop! Super fun carousel and train ride too. I could go on and on we really really LOVE the Louisville Zoo!
  • I love going to the zoo. We took our group of 40 kids and it was fun. One of the kids got hurt. It was an accidental fall. The staff was the best. They helped her and made her feel better. This place is THE place to go.
  • To get the best value out of the Louisville zoo, really depends on what you want from it. I thoroughly enjoy the zoo with my family as members. Less than $100, for a family of four, gives us access for a whole calendar year, with very few closed days. The Louisville zoo does not hold up to the Cincinnati zoo in terms of number of exhibits, but it works really well with what it has. There are regular trainings held with several of the animals, and frequently "Zoo Ambassador" animals are out in the public areas, where staff are there to educate any one who cares to learn about the animals. One thing that I love about the Louisville Zoo, that in my mind puts it above many other zoos, is the terrain. It is built into a large hill. This may not be a draw for one time visitors, who just want a leisurely stroll, but as a regular visitor, I greatly value a place where I'm surrounded by beautiful landscaping and exotic animals, and I get the chance to get a little exercise in for myself, and my children. Also, there is a tram service for those that desire a ride instead of a walk.
  • Smaller zoo than anticipated, but it was a good atmosphere. Depending on the time of year you go there will be some exhibits that are closed (for example, the penguin exhibit due to hatching season), so make sure you check with the website before you visit. Gift shops were fun and everything has affordable pricing.

Where to stay in Louisville

Old Town has a number of atmospheric hotels close to the city’s main attractions, while hotels in the Highlands neighborhood offer proximity to the city’s most unusual bars, restaurants, and stores. Louisville’s collection of bed and breakfasts, generally farther from town, are a great way to experience some warm Kentucky hospitality. To save some money and enjoy the city’s scenic surroundings on a vacation in Louisville, consider one of Louisville’s campgrounds. The Jefferson Memorial Forest is just 24 km (15 mi) south of downtown.
