Louisville Zoo, Louisville

4.0
#1 of 59 in Outdoors in Kentucky
In 54 hectares (134 acres) of natural setting, Louisville Zoo houses 1,700 different mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, fish, and invertebrates. This zoo was one of the first ones in the world to introduce rotating exhibits--where animals are moved throughout different habitats in order to have a better quality of life. Stroll through themed exhibits, such as a gorilla forest and a glacier town. See rare animals, such as an albino alligator. Take a train ride, or climb and balance on ropes above the zoo at an attraction for children and families. You can also interact with the zookeepers and learn about the animals. • Easy to navigate with a wide variety of animals. Went during off season and wasn’t crazy busy and could see everything we wanted to in a few hours with young children.  more »

  • This zoo was fun. I really liked how they had a lot of injured animals who otherwise would have a hard time surviving the wild. My favorite part was the Gorilla enclosure. Those primates loved to watch videos of other gorillas on people's cell phones. You ought to try it. It was so funny when they bang on the window whenever they want you to change the video 😆 Overall this seems like a well kept zoo and they have a good variety of animals from all continents.
  • I remember coming to the zoo for several field trips in Elementary school. It was always such a treat and so very informative. I attribute my love for animals to the education and opportunity to view these amazing animals. I couldn’t wait to take our kids for the first time to show them all the wonderful animals and reptiles. The renovations are stunning and Halloween at the Zoo is by far my favorite time of year! So many fond memories of this place and many more to come! Love you all and everything you do to maintain a safe and comfortable environment for these amazing creatures!!
  • We love our zoo. It's not very big, but it is beautiful and there are a wide variety of animals. We have had a membership ever since we had kids, and it is the perfect afternoon trip. In the summer, my son absolutely loves the water park! It's small enough that you can keep an eye on your kids, but there are tons of activities in there! The Louisville Zoo is also a great conservation zoo. We are proud to support it!
  • I've had the pleasure of seeing behind the scenes at this wonderful zoo. They really do care about their animals and making the zoo safe for them and their visitors. It's always so much fun visiting.
  • Overall not a bad Zoo I rated it 4 stars because the animals that were there were very active in seemed to be very visible and interesting to look at. I would have probably given it 5 stars but many animals were not where they should be because they were doing maintenance and there are a lot of closed exhibits. The hardest part about this zoo is really understanding the flow and how to go around it. Even with a map it's kind of hard to understand which path will take you to where you want to go, and buildings that look closed we're actually exhibits that were open. They just need to have better signage for their guests.

Where to stay in Louisville

Old Town has a number of atmospheric hotels close to the city’s main attractions, while hotels in the Highlands neighborhood offer proximity to the city’s most unusual bars, restaurants, and stores. Louisville’s collection of bed and breakfasts, generally farther from town, are a great way to experience some warm Kentucky hospitality. To save some money and enjoy the city’s scenic surroundings on a vacation in Louisville, consider one of Louisville’s campgrounds. The Jefferson Memorial Forest is just 24 km (15 mi) south of downtown.
