The Original Farmers Market, Los Angeles

4.4
Over 100 vendors sell a wide variety of cuisines from around the world at The Original Farmers Market. What's now an outdoor market started as a place for a few local farmers to sell their produce from their trucks during the Depression. The farmers' market quickly transformed into the massive permanent outdoor market that still stands in the same place. While there are no longer any actual farmers selling produce, the market has retained the original feel by prohibiting big chains, and keeping vendors local. • Another must visit destination in LA. Dozens of food vendors and confectionery stalls. A little bit of everything. Wished we could have visited multiple times to try different places. We settled on Monsieur Marcel and it was good. They have a shop as well. Also get some toffee from Little John's. Like the lady in the info office said, "It'll curl your toes it's so good." It's easy to see why this place is considered an institution. The Grove, an upscale shopping mall is just next door. Parking may be a bit of a challenge during peak times and the traffic around the entrance was a little on the crazy side. (We ended up parking on side street a couple of blocks away). Also it can get a little crowded navigating from stall to stall once inside as it can get a bit narrow in places Grabbing a table may involve a little anxiety too during peak hours (we got there around 1:30 PM on a Sunday). It's definitely worth it though.
  • If you are only staying for less than two hours, park in the farmers parking for free. There are various restaurants and old style farmers shops. If you want to find exquisite French items and wine & cheese, go to Monsieur Marcel gourmet market. The Grove has more shopping opportunities and restaurants that will satisfy everyone. Check the website for events and bands playing for free. Parking on the Grove side will cost you.
  • Large variety of modestly priced foods and specialty shops, with world class people watching. Good ambiance for an informal date or your tourist visitors. However, the parking lot can become a frustrating clog. You can cheat and park at The Grove, who apparently likes your foot traffic walking by all their sales displays, but NOT across 3rd Street, where they seem to hate Farmers Market customers.
  • Let me tell you a bit about this farmer's market! I came here the first time about 15 years ago obviously everything was much different and now I'm glad to see this place in a much better conditions, I saw a lot lot more people. They still have that big selection of food, drinks and dessert. You can eat from Chinese, italian, American and Mexican. This is the place where all different race, religion and beliefs come together and just enjoy the nice atmosphere and super delicious food. You can spend all day here with the family ,There is also a huge parking structure so You don't have to worry about parking, I spent like 4 hrs here and only paid 2.50 when we left. Definitely worth it! I highly recommend this place.
  • This is a MUST visit place when you come to Los Angeles. There are a lot of vendors here selling different types of food, souvenirs and some restaurants. Parking.... there are two places where you can park; there is free parking in the Farmer's side for up to 90 minutes; if you park on the Grove side it is a different story. There are events held here as well.... so regardless of the occasion, come on over!

Where to stay in Los Angeles

Los Angeles may be synonymous with luxury, but its accommodations include not only some of the most opulent and expensive hotels in the world, but also budget-priced hostels and inexpensive inns. In Los Angeles, a car opens up a world of lodging options, allowing you to stay outside the city proper and still have easy access to most major tourist attractions. If you don't mind splurging, consider Hollywood or Beverly Hills. To save money, stay near the airport or in the eastern suburbs of the city.
