The Orcutt Ranch Horticulture Center, formally known as Rancho Sombra del Roble, is a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument (HCM #31) located in the West Hills section of Los Angeles, California, USA.William Orcutt's vacation homeOrcutt Ranch was the vacation and retirement estate of William Warren Orcutt, an early pioneer of oil production in California and the discoverer of one of the first prehistoric skeletons at the La Brea Tar Pits. The Rancho Sombra del Roble, Spanish for "Ranch of the Shaded Oak", was originally a 210acre cattle ranch and citrus orchard at the foot of the Simi Hills. Orcutt bought the property in 1917, and hired architect L.G. Knipe (who designed some of the original campus structures of Arizona State University) to design his home on the ranch. The 3060sqft residence, in the blend of Spanish Colonial Revival Style and Mission Revival Style architecture, was completed in approximately 1926. It features glazed tiles from Mexico and carved mahogany and walnut from the Philippines. Visitors are surprised to find that the design of the home prominently incorporates bas-relief Swastika architectural decoration. Mary Orcutt, William's wife, chose the symbol due to its connection with Native American traditions, and did so before the Nazis turned it into a symbol of anti-Semitism and genocide. President Herbert Hoover, who was a friend of the Orcutts, visited the ranch.

  • If you didn't know it was there you could pass it many times without realizing what a great place it is. Orange groves and Oak trees abound and it's right in the middle of busy San Fernando Valley.  more »

  • Despite living nearby for years I've never been there before. Really a great little park. Trails are well maintained and easy to walk. There are a ton of citrus trees of various kinds scattered throughout. While we were there some of the grapefruits were almost ripe. There are signs about coyotes everywhere, and believe them. We saw one walking across the trail right infront of us. Watch little dogs if you bring them.
  • This park is a great place to visit in the valley. You can walk around and explore while been safe. If you play Pokemon Go then you will have a different type of fun. Lots of poke stop and gyms to battle. If you are looking for a place to have a wedding this is very appropriate as well
  • We took engagement photos here, and they came out perfectly. It was just perfect and beautiful. So glad it was open to the public for us to have beautiful photos. We are from out of town so we needed a place that would be convenient, and this was absolutely perfect.
  • Great and easily accessible ranch. Always friendly people around. Good place to play Pokemon Go with several gyms and many Pokestops.
  • A nice place for a wedding or party or reception beautiful grounds sort of in the outskirts of Canoga Park a little bit in the wilderness what's left of it in Canoga Park anymore. No swings no slides nothing for children to play on but it is a nice place to get away and be able to sit and beautiful grounds one- point be careful of the coyotes.
