Cabrillo Beach is a historic beach located in San Pedro, Los Angeles, California. It is named after Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo, a Portuguese explorer who was the first to sail up the California coast. Cabrillo has two separate beach areas.LifeguardsLos Angeles City Lifeguards and Los Angeles County Lifeguards are responsible for the beach and ocean safety in and around the Cabrillo Beach area.GeographyCabrillo Beach is located next to the Los Angeles Harbor and is 20 miles from Catalina Island.Water SportsCabrillo Beach is a popular destination for those interested in water sports, such as swimming, windsurfing, kitesurfing, kayaking and scuba diving.Cabrillo Beach is known by 'Turn-of-the-Century Sailors' to windsurfers alike, as "Hurricane Gulch" because of its predictably strong westerly winds.LandmarksIt is also home to a few famous landmarks, namely the 1.75 mile Los Angeles Breakwater which ends at the Angel's Gate Lighthouse, the recently restored Cabrillo Beach Bathhouse, and the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium. Hi, Wouldn't recommend this beach at all for sunbathing or swimming as both the sand and water are not clean. Additionally as a warning to people with little kids who might play in the shallow water, ... read more »
Seemingly a local hangout, we wandered upon it and loved it! Parking is the best we found, $1 per hour. Not too crowded. But oh my, was it cold!
