Noguchi Museum, Long Island City

#3 of 6 in Things to do in Long Island City
In 1974, Noguchi purchased an industrial building across the street from his studio in Long Island City, Queens. The new space was used as an office, studio, and storage facility before it was converted into The Noguchi Museum, which opened to the public in 1985.

The Noguchi Museum consists of twenty-seven thousand square feet of gallery space on two floors as well as the sculpture garden. The ground-floor galleries contain a permanent presentation of Noguchi's artwork, selected and arranged by the artist. The upper level contains additional artworks from the permanent collection as well as temporary thematic exhibitions relating to Noguchi's artistic production and influence.

  • I LOVE THIS MUSEUM!!! Highly recommend a visit. The first Friday of the month is free. I came knowing nothing about the sculptor, but I was mesmerized by his work and the tranquil, calm atmosphere. It's really a lovely way to spend an afternoon. I spent several hours there and wish I could have spent more. There is an outdoor garden and a very pretty little cafe. It's extremely beautiful. Love it!
  • A little Astoria gem. I am honestly a little ashamed I've lived in Astoria 10 years and only JUST went to this museum this year. It is such a beautifully designed space, you are immediately transported when you enter and a feeling of calm washes over you. The sculptures are thoughtfully displayed in a variety of indoor and outdoor settings, and there are handy informational cards for each room so you don't have to squint at panels on a wall. The museum is just the right size- plenty to see but not overwhelming. You can take your time with each piece and not feel rushed. Highly recommend for anyone, sculpture lovers especially.
  • A great small museum. The garden is very nice & peaceful. We enjoyed the guided tour.
  • One of NYC’s best kept secrets. Amazing indoor/outdoor sculpture experience by mid century master, Isamu Noguchi. Great gift shop, too!
  • Serene, looks small but if you appreciate art you'll definitely spend 2 hours here.
