Alabama Hills, Lone Pine

(4.9/5 based on 500+ reviews on the web)
With their stark and rugged beauty, Alabama Hills quintessentially represent the Wild West--so much so that a number of cowboy television shows and movies have been filmed here. These hills constitute part of the Sierra Nevada, though they are much more rounded and not quite as high as most of the range's peaks. Hike or climb the impressive formations to discover colorful wildflowers and surreal natural arches. Be sure to bring your camera and wear sensible walking gear. Put Alabama Hills and other Lone Pine attractions into our Lone Pine tourist route planner, and watch your holiday take shape.

  • I got there late in the day and the light was fading, so I did not drive far, but I can imagine how awesome the rest of it is! I only saw the beginning of the drive. The rock formations are out of thi...  more »
  • Picturesque rocky hills where you can play Cowboys and Indians... Or take photos and hike... Good half-day activity.
  • Access is by a road in the center of Lone Pine. We then entered on the "Road Movie" road, which leads to all of the sites where the movies were shot. The site of the Alabama Hills is absolutely superb, with views of Mount Whitney at the bottom. Many stops photo on the road (in Earth but passable), many short walks to do if you have the time. Really superb. Few tourists. One of the places that we prefer our circuit in Nevada, Utah, Arizona, California national parks. Note that we were there at Christmas and the mountains were covered with snow, and it was a big blue sky: the landscape was beautiful. Tip If you are fan of cinema: ask at your hotel or at the cinema Museum in Lone Pine (free) map of the Alabama Hills with the indications of filming by film locations, this will allow you to identify and recognize the places. You could spend an hour if there is no time and several hours if we time to do a few short walks. The loop of the Movie road is about 25 km.
