La Purisima Mission State Historic Park, Lompoc

#1 of 12 in Things to do in Lompoc
Explore the cultural heritage of California at La Purisima Mission State Historic Park. The park covers an area of 1220 sq km (470 sq mi) and represents what used to be the home of the Chumash people, as well as Spanish settlers. Hike around the park and discover original buildings from 1820s, or watch for livestock that lives there today. You can see the reconstruction of life from that period, with pottery and candle making, weaving, and blacksmithing on site. After stepping through the trees and seeing the mission from a far, it feels like you are immediately back in the 1800s. We loved this place. Very nice.  more »

True feeling of the mission life back in the day. This is not an active church so is more historical than the other 20. Farm animals in pasture, quiet with swallows flying, it was serene. Pay only parking fee and self guide a tour of the site. Beautiful.

This has been my favorite of the missions I've visited. It is nestled in hills, and it really feels like one is stepping back in time. It was the most affordable to visit, as well. The day we visited, there were many volunteers dressed in period costumes and hosting demonstrations: tortilla making, brick making, wool spinning, weaving, and candle making. The kids got to experience these hands on. This mission felt like a living museum, rather stale one. Definitely, well-worth the visit!!!

Great place to spend the day, but better bring your own drink and sandwich if you planning to have lunch there. At the site don't even have a vending machine.

One of the best of all California missions. Astoundingly accurate restoration work by FDR'S CCC. Really captures the life of the padres, crafters and soldiers who lived and worked here in the 1600s and 1700s.
