Overpeck County Park is an 811acre county park in Bergen County, New Jersey, with major sections in Leonia, Palisades Park, Ridgefield Park, and Teaneck, surrounding Overpeck Creek, a tributary of the Hackensack River. The Overpeck Creek flows to the west of the Henry Hoebel Area and the South Area of the park.HistoryThe first inhabitants of the area were Ashkineshacky Native Americans, who lived around Leonia. Approximately a thousand Native Americans had their seasonal activities, collecting shells for wampum and hosting their bath festivals in Overpeck Creek. In 1954, the president of the Bergen County Park Commission, A. Thornton Bishop, proposed a plan to build a county park. This park was originally planned to rival Central Park in New York City.In the 1950s, Leonia, Palisades Park, Ridgefield Park, and Teaneck donated municipal land for the development of the Overpeck County Park. Henry Hoebel Area was the first area to undergo development; the other areas remained undeveloped and were used as dumping sites for garbage and car tires until they posed environmental hazards to their surroundings. The park vicinity was notable being filled with solid waste. Ridgefield Park and Teaneck filed a lawsuit against Bergen County because the park land was not developed and used properly. The project began in 2003 and it is expected to be completed in September 2009 (though it's currently 2015 and clearly this article hasn't been updated a quite a while).Plan your visit to Overpeck County Park and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our Leonia trip itinerary builder.

This is a lovely area for walking, kids play areas, sitting watching the world go buy as you watch the water. Came for a New Jersey Symphony Orchestra Pops Concert. Good band. Sound from the speakers ... more »

Excellent spot and safe for riding your bike or having a day out with the kids. They also have scheduled events during the spring and summer for things such as wine tasting and just recently this Memorial Day weekend a Dinosaur exhibition for the kiddies. Most of all I love the police presence as all kinds of things can happen nowadays just getting your not on if your a woman. Definitely recommend.

They've redone and gentrified an already nice park. The walking path is amazing. There's a pretty bridge and a large pond. Good for serious walking or jogging. Plenty of parking. Many areas to explore.

Great park, has the river so you can kayak, canoe or fish. The roads are nicely paved. The ampitheater is busy in the summer. There is a larger soccer field, baseball field and playground. There is also a large area for drones and kites. Also the dog park is just across the street

I love this place! It's so clean and huge. I come here to do yoga once in a while, go for a walk, take my friend's daughter to the park, etc. There are tons to do here, even canoeing! One of the best parks I've ever been to :)

Not sure if it open 24 hours ， but park is fairly bright after sunset. Trails around the park for jogging and biking. Tennis courts, food stand (check the operating schedule), baseball field, football field and a river for kayaking. Open all year round. Beautiful place ti walk around. By yourself, or with groups of friends. Not liking the dog park though, too crowded. Be sure to come here for a Sumner concert, or a carnival on the big lawn, where kites can be flown on a windy day.
