Overpeck County Park, Leonia
Categories: Nature & Parks
Overpeck County Park is an 811acre county park in Bergen County, New Jersey, with major sections in Leonia, Palisades Park, Ridgefield Park, and Teaneck, surrounding Overpeck Creek, a tributary of the Hackensack River. The Overpeck Creek flows to the west of the Henry Hoebel Area and the South Area of the park.HistoryThe first inhabitants of the area were Ashkineshacky Native Americans, who lived around Leonia. Approximately a thousand Native Americans had their seasonal activities, collecting shells for wampum and hosting their bath festivals in Overpeck Creek. In 1954, the president of the Bergen County Park Commission, A. Thornton Bishop, proposed a plan to build a county park. This park was originally planned to rival Central Park in New York City.In the 1950s, Leonia, Palisades Park, Ridgefield Park, and Teaneck donated municipal land for the development of the Overpeck County Park. Henry Hoebel Area was the first area to undergo development; the other areas remained undeveloped and were used as dumping sites for garbage and car tires until they posed environmental hazards to their surroundings. The park vicinity was notable being filled with solid waste. Ridgefield Park and Teaneck filed a lawsuit against Bergen County because the park land was not developed and used properly. The project began in 2003 and it is expected to be completed in September 2009 (though it's currently 2015 and clearly this article hasn't been updated a quite a while).Plan your visit to Overpeck County Park and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our Leonia trip itinerary builder.

I live in Leonia and come to both parks all the time. The family and I had a nice picnic last weekend at the "old overpeck" park. Bring a football or baseball and some gloves and let the kids wear the... read more »

I launch my canoe from the public dock into the calm waters. Sometimes I take a swim. This place is beautiful. There are restrooms and picnic tables. You can rent a kayak right there too. I've seen river otters, herons, and other water fowl I don't know the names of. I highly recommend it. Lots of docks all over the water for easy stoppage. Sometimes the parking can be sparse because this place is so popular with joggers, bikers, families picnicking, etc...
Amazing park with so much of space n greenery.. various sports places inside the park.. Loved riding my bicycle here.. great place to visit... 👍
Best park in the area. Rowing, skating, biking, waking, and even fishing(I think) are all available here. Busy, but not packed. A ton of parking. It has the old over peck park across the street if you want to play tennis, handball, or basketball. Also has a track around the old field. The new over peck park has an amphitheatre and the place is huge. No grilling there I believe. Never seen anyone cookout there. Roads and paths are paved nice and plenty of pokestops for kids. Baseball field and soccer fields seem world class.
A huge flat park in the northern corner of Bergen County. It's a nice place to go for a run, a bike ride, a kayak ride, a Pokemon stroll, a dog walk or just lay out on one of the many lawns. Several cultural events over the course of the year happen here. Baseball fields, tennis courts, volleyball courts and a pretty new children's playground.
Huge park with beautiful water body n launch pad. Nice play area for kids, well maintained restrooms. Very nice place for early morning walk.
