Overpeck County Park, Leonia
(4.7/5 based on 45 reviews on the web)
Overpeck County Park is an 811acre county park in Bergen County, New Jersey, with major sections in Leonia, Palisades Park, Ridgefield Park, and Teaneck, surrounding Overpeck Creek, a tributary of the Hackensack River. The Overpeck Creek flows to the west of the Henry Hoebel Area and the South Area of the park.HistoryThe first inhabitants of the area were Ashkineshacky Native Americans, who lived around Leonia. Approximately a thousand Native Americans had their seasonal activities, collecting shells for wampum and hosting their bath festivals in Overpeck Creek. In 1954, the president of the Bergen County Park Commission, A. Thornton Bishop, proposed a plan to build a county park. This park was originally planned to rival Central Park in New York City.In the 1950s, Leonia, Palisades Park, Ridgefield Park, and Teaneck donated municipal land for the development of the Overpeck County Park. Henry Hoebel Area was the first area to undergo development; the other areas remained undeveloped and were used as dumping sites for garbage and car tires until they posed environmental hazards to their surroundings. The park vicinity was notable being filled with solid waste. Ridgefield Park and Teaneck filed a lawsuit against Bergen County because the park land was not developed and used properly. The project began in 2003 and it is expected to be completed in September 2009 (though it's currently 2015 and clearly this article hasn't been updated a quite a while).

  • I launch my canoe from the public dock into the calm waters. Sometimes I take a swim. This place is beautiful. There are restrooms and picnic tables. You can rent a kayak right there too. I've seen river otters, herons, and other water fowl I don't know the names of. I highly recommend it. Lots of docks all over the water for easy stoppage. Sometimes the parking can be sparse because this place is so popular with joggers, bikers, families picnicking, etc...
  • Beautiful!! Huge park with so much to do! Fun for families, hikers, or even a romantic little trip to watch the sunset. Really worth visiting! Stunning views of the NYC skyline but far enough away to remain quiet and peaceful.
  • It was a gigantic, beautiful park. I went here with some friends to a Latin festival. Afterwards we walked down by the water and saw you could canoe and kayak as well as play on the other sports fields and playground. Can't wait to come back and hike.
  • A huge flat park in the northern corner of Bergen County. It's a nice place to go for a run, a bike ride, a kayak ride, a Pokemon stroll, a dog walk or just lay out on one of the many lawns. Several cultural events over the course of the year happen here. Baseball fields, tennis courts, volleyball courts and a pretty new children's playground.
  • Very average park. There are a few benches. A large loop around the entire park. Very flat and open. There are a few War memorials in the park. Some times there are fairs on the grounds. Very average park
