Overpeck County Park is an 811acre county park in Bergen County, New Jersey, with major sections in Leonia, Palisades Park, Ridgefield Park, and Teaneck, surrounding Overpeck Creek, a tributary of the Hackensack River. The Overpeck Creek flows to the west of the Henry Hoebel Area and the South Area of the park.HistoryThe first inhabitants of the area were Ashkineshacky Native Americans, who lived around Leonia. Approximately a thousand Native Americans had their seasonal activities, collecting shells for wampum and hosting their bath festivals in Overpeck Creek. In 1954, the president of the Bergen County Park Commission, A. Thornton Bishop, proposed a plan to build a county park. This park was originally planned to rival Central Park in New York City.In the 1950s, Leonia, Palisades Park, Ridgefield Park, and Teaneck donated municipal land for the development of the Overpeck County Park. Henry Hoebel Area was the first area to undergo development; the other areas remained undeveloped and were used as dumping sites for garbage and car tires until they posed environmental hazards to their surroundings. The park vicinity was notable being filled with solid waste. Ridgefield Park and Teaneck filed a lawsuit against Bergen County because the park land was not developed and used properly. The project began in 2003 and it is expected to be completed in September 2009 (though it's currently 2015 and clearly this article hasn't been updated a quite a while). To visit Overpeck County Park on your trip to Leonia, use our Leonia online trip itinerary planner .

Had fun with Kayaking. The Kayak rentals are to the right of Fort Lee Road/Overpeck Park Driveway intersection, via the wooden bridges. The staff there were quite friendly and helpful. Just a note tha... more »
Really great park. Has a lot of space for bike riding, running, walking, play area for the children, food, restroom, sports area...I could go on. It's a really beautiful place to spend a warm day with your family and/or friends.
Beautiful park...well maintained...clean..scenic. Went to see an awesome car show there in August. One of a kind place.
I love going to overpeck County Park it's the best place to go when you need to think about what's there Birds people green trees butterflies and a beautiful scene in of the world what it looks like tall buildings people laughing kids playing and everything else
Pretty nice park, I go for the dog run they have. It's a pretty decent size. I would give it the 5 stars but it lacks a couple of things that I believe to be important in a dog park. First and more important a water supply , there is none and if your don't bring water for your dog and sometimes that other 3 or four dogs there that will surely cut your time in the park. The actual park nice grass and in this area there is dirt. Really why can't we have grass or mulch or pebbles? anything is better than dirt!
Not sure if it open 24 hours ， but park is fairly bright after sunset. Trails around the park for jogging and biking. Tennis courts, food stand (check the operating schedule), baseball field, football field and a river for kayaking. Open all year round. Beautiful place ti walk around. By yourself, or with groups of friends. Not liking the dog park though, too crowded. Be sure to come here for a Sumner concert, or a carnival on the big lawn, where kites can be flown on a windy day.
