#2 of 9 in Things to do in Lee Vining
Visit the intriguing Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Reserve, around a lake which has no outlet. Just outside Yosemite National Park, the lake collects salt, supporting an unusual ecosystem. Brine shrimp thrive in the waters, and they attract migratory birds. Admire the otherworldly tufa towers, which are limestone formations that look like fairy castles rising from the clear water. A conservation committee that formed to protect the area offers seminars, traditional tours, and guided canoeing and bird watching jaunts. Visit the committee's website to check the tour calendar and book a spot. • Extremely cool place if you aren't groused out by a very specific smell, dead birds you can find along the coast or tons of flies in the summer. It is a terminal saline lake after all. Also, most of it isn't as picturesque as you might think, so don't expect it to look like another planet everywhere you go. Otherwise an interesting location, definitely worth checking out at least once:)
  • A very unique alpine lake with brackish green water and a beautiful still water reflection for photos. The boardwalk makes it very easy for anyone to access.
  • Every time I'm in this area I have to stop and take in the view. Along a boardwalk you can get closer to the interesting tufa and take a good look. Picnic tables and restrooms. Parking few is $ 3.00.
  • Amazing vista point during winter, check it out if you're in California.
  • Very unique place to visit. We visited during November and there were not too many flies around. I only saw pictures before but finally got to see Mono Lake in person.
