Bennett Spring State Park, Lebanon
(4.6/5 based on 170+ reviews on the web)
Bennett Spring State Park is located in Bennett Springs, Missouri, approximately west of Lebanon on Highway 64 and is in Dallas and Laclede counties. The park was established in 1923. It is centered on the spring that flows into the Niangua River and gives the park its name. The spring averages 100 million gallons (380,000 m3) of daily flow. The park offers fly fishing, camping, canoeing, and hiking, among other activities.HistoryIn 1837 the James Brice family built a mill at the stream and the spring became known as Brice Spring. The town that built up was known as Brice. The family of Peter Bennett soon settled near the spring and started their own mill. Originally, the families were rivals, but they soon intermarried. Both of these mills were eventually destroyed in a flood. During the Civil War years, another mill was constructed by Peter Bennett. This Bennett Mill was larger and more successful than the Brice mill. The spring soon took on the Bennett name. Peter died in 1882 and his son William Sherman Bennett took over. The Bennett Mill burned in 1895.In the 1930s the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) made various improvements to the park. The CCC built the dining lodge, cabins, trails, roads, shelters, gauge station, and the arched stone bridge across the spring branch. The bridge has 3 distinctive sideways ā€œCā€™sā€ to memorialize the men of the CCC who built it. The CCC also channelized the spring branch and constructed the dam just upstream of the stone bridge to make the spring more habitable to the non-native trout. The dam is used to divert water through the fish hatchery and to maintain a constant water level at Bennett Spring to this day.

  • I have been to Bennett Springs many times. Never had a complaint. Everything perfect and beautiful. Staff friendly and professional. I was there last week and a totally different situation! My sister and I planned a 5 day vacation there last week. We drove over from Texas. We stayed Wensday thru Sunday. My sister had her 4 grandchildren. I told her it's a perfect place to take the 3 boys ages 9-12 as they are avid fishermen. The night we checked in we put well over a $100 worth of seafood in the freezer. Went to town to buy more groceries including ice cream. Two hours later we came home to thawing shrimp and fish. Things happen. They sent maintenance after 45 minutes. There was a little frost on the back wall of the freezer and told us the freezer was working and he would call and check back. We put ice on the seafood and ice cream. Two hours later he called, we told him it wasn't working. He came and gave us a key to the other unit to use its freezer. They brought out another ice box the next night. Same night at 8:45 the smoke alarms went off. All four of them loud and a recording, " there is fire get out". We do not smoke and were not cooking. It stopped after about 30 seconds. A few minutes later they went off again. We gathered our purses and electronics and 4 kids and went out side. I called the desk ( store ) and got a recording, " line is busy call back. I looked at my watch it was 10 minutes till 9. The store closes at 9. I called several more times and got the same recording, until after 9 in which I got a new recording that the store was closed! I had seen a phone number for emergencies by the fire extinguisher and called it. I explained everything to him and he said "when you got the recording you should have held the number 2 button and someone would have picked up, they were still in the store". I said," I didn't know that, how am I supposed to know that?". He got upset and told me he doesn't work for the state, but he would get a hold of them and they would send someone out. We waited outside with 4 kids for 45 minutes still no one came. I called him back, and he was really angry this time and told me he did contact them even tho it wasn't his job. We waited a while longer it's 10 PM by this time and I called the Lebanon police department. I honestly didn't know what else to do. I was giving them directions to our unit when finally the maintenance man pulled up. I hung up. He changed all the batteries in the smoke alarms, and left. It was 10:20! There were other things to complain about, like the floors were dirty, couldn't go bare footed. The garbage can was filthy inside. The dumpster had rotten fish in it and you couldn't set outside without getting sick. They said the garbage people are supposed to come out more often in the summer months. Also when my sister booked our unit the Internet page boasted a swimming pool as one of the amenities. NO, you have to PAY $4 a day to swim. $4 a day times 4 kids times 5 days adds up. They closed the pool after our second day so it didn't matter. Claimed they had no lifeguards, kids going back to college. Not true school didn't start that week. When we checked out, I mentioned all the things, but I was very polite. She said, "I will tell them about the website and the pool."That was it. Not Even Imsorry your stay wasn't good or anything! I told her, " ma'am I'm going to write a review and it's not going to be good, because I don't want other people experiencing what we did". She said, "Do what you gotta do" Really? How haughty can you be? I was raised in Missouri, just a few miles from there in Long Lane. I don't remember people being so rude. Wasn't worth almost $800. There are much better places to stay less than a mile away. Well that's my review.
  • Absolutely my favorite place...gets a bit crowded but is beautiful and always limit out...
  • Wonderful place to take the kidlets. Fun hiking trails (hard and easy). Beautiful views and a nice nature center with informative displays.
