The University of Kansas (KU) is a public research university with its main campus in Lawrence, Kansas, United States, and several satellite campuses, research and educational centers, medical centers, and classes across the state of Kansas. Two branch campuses are in the Kansas City metropolitan area on the Kansas side: the university's medical school and hospital in Kansas City, the Edwards Campus in Overland Park, a hospital and research center in the state's capital of Topeka, and a hospital and research center in Hays. There are also educational and research sites in Garden City, Hays, Leavenworth, Parsons, and Topeka, an agricultural education center in rural north Douglas County, and branches of the medical school in Salina and Wichita. The university is a member of the Association of American Universities and is classified among "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity".
Founded March 21, 1865, the university was opened in 1866, under a charter granted by the Kansas State Legislature in 1864 and legislation passed in 1863 under the State Constitution, which was adopted two years after the 1861 admission of the former Kansas Territory as the 34th state into the Union.
Enrollment at the Lawrence and Edwards campuses was 23,958 students in fall 2021; an additional 3,727 students were enrolled at the KU Medical Center (KUMC) for an enrollment of 27,685 students across the three campuses. The university overall (including KUMC) employed 4,776 faculty members (faculty, faculty administrators, graduate student employees and librarians) in fall 2021.
Kansas's athletic teams compete in NCAA Division I sports as the Jayhawks, as members of the Big 12 Conference. They field 16 varsity sports, as well as club-level sports for ice hockey, rugby, and men's volleyball.

  • Kansas has a nice campus with good architecture. It is sandwiched on two sides of a mountain (by Kansas standards) that gives you a good hike. You can visit the lobby of Allen Fieldhouse on...

  • We brought our twins for a scheduled campus visit. Very well-run, organized with a personal tour. All in two hours. Free tee was nice. Scheduled times to visit dorms and faculty was great.

  • Beautiful school with great students. I love this town of Lawrence, there are many delicious food and wonderful people!
  • One of the most beautiful universities in Kansas (yes, I know the quality of education is more important). I came here for some friends' graduation some years ago and it was packed full of people! I liked the atmosphere here.
  • Absolutely gorgeous campus, fantastic professors, and a world class education. Continually produces students that lead not only in their Kansas communities, but also on the global stage. In addition to that, the faculty and staff at this school truly care for your well being. If challenging yourself to be the best version of yourself is something you're interested in then this is the university for you. Rock chalk!
  • Central location in town, fit the most part. Semi friendly staff, classes are generic, all sororities and fraternities both seem to have reputations around town. Seems like a decent enough school, lots of home town pride.
  • 👎 any school with an angry white males studies course doesn't deserve to exist. what a shame
