Tugaloo State Park, Lavonia

4.4
#41 of 94 in Nature in Georgia
Situated on a wooded peninsula, Tugaloo’s cottages and most campsites offer spectacular views of 55,590-acre Lake Hartwell in every direction. Some cottages even have private boat docks for overnight guests. Tent campers can choose between the developed campground or primitive sites located a short walk from the parking area. During summer, the lake is a popular destination for swimming, water skiing, sailing and boating. Both the Sassafras and Muscadine hiking trails wind through oak, walnut, mulberry and cherry trees.

Tugaloo State Park boasts a six-lane mega ramp used for large fishing tournaments and easy lake access. Fishing is excellent year-round, and large-mouth bass are plentiful. The name “Tugaloo” comes from an Indian name for the river which once flowed freely prior to the construction of Hartwell Dam.

  • There is 10 yurts here. There is one ADA yurt. It is at the parking lot at the top of the hill. The rest of the yurts are down hill from the parking lot. You need a lot of energy to take your camping ...  more »
  • We love going to the beach and taking a picnic lunch or dogs for the grill. We always have a game or two of putt putt golf. The cabins are nice & roomy, not always clean though. The best part of Tugal...  more »
  • Nice, quiet, secluded and calm. Very few people around so a real treat. You can even sleep in a Yurt right by the beach/lake. Color coded walking trails - just make sure you buy a parking ticket ($5)  more »

  • Well kept park with more amenities than most Georgia State Parks. Decent shoreline trails, newly renovated cabins, picnic areas, and mini golf. Very little in the way of invasive plants in the forests. The residential neighborhoods are far enough away that it still feels fairly isolated. The approach from I-85 is well marked with the typical brown signs.
  • We really enjoyed this park! The playground is really great and looks over the lake. It is right next to an adorable miniature golf course. We went on a beautiful hike as well. A whole lot of fun for just $5.
  • Beautiful park on the lake. In January we were the only ones there. We only had sewer and water hookups but there is a dump station so no big deal. We only stayed two nights but the staff was very accommodating. We arrived after hours with no reservation and we called to let them know and they said just to pick a spot and pay in the morning. Very cheap park which is amazing for the view. They have kayak rentals, putting course, hiking trails, restrooms etc. Would stay there again. It should be mentioned that the gates close at 10pm.
  • Beautiful place. But get an advance reservation for campsites or cabins because the woman in the park office was quick to turn me away saying there was no availability when the website showed otherwise. She was not helpful or even take the time to look at bookings.
  • Good sporting park. Fishing, boating. Cabins are great little pricey but best part of this park.
