When my husband and I went, there was a bumpy dirt access road and fence blocking off the butte. We got horrible lost on the way back. If you go take a four wheel drive and a good map.
Seeing yellow (daisy like) flowers coming out of the sandy soil is amazing. NOT as many due to drought. But... what ever was there, was "a feast" for eyes.
The g nav directions to this place will steer you completely wrong down a washboard dirt road to nowhere on the south side of the butte (2/2016). The campground and day use areas are on the NW corner of the park, enter on Ave J just east of the corner of 170th St E. The camping is further south down the drive from the day use picnic area. It's a pleasant enough campground, with nice hike through the sand and Joshua trees, but you are fairly aware of the populated Palmdale areas to the west. An austere high desert setting but sure nice at sunset. Camping is $26 which is pretty steep.
