  • Don’t know the difference between a chukker and a mallet? Never stomped a divot before? Don’t let unfamiliar terms or confusion over the rules deter you from spending a relaxing and entertaining afternoon at the Sarasota Polo Club. The terminology is quickly picked up, and the gameplay is easy for anyone with a basic knowledge of soccer, basketball, of hockey to understand. Just get the white ball three hundred yards downfield, and knock it into the goal. With a wooden mallet. While galloping on horseback. Don’t worry, by the end of the first chukker, (a seven and a half minute period of play, of which there are six) you will understand the game well enough to enjoy yourself. By the end of the third (half time, and time to go out onto the field and stomp those divots) you will be convinced that this is the perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon. The action actually starts three hours before gametime, at 10:00 am, when the grounds open and the cars begin lining up along the field. Canopies and umbrellas soon appear, the folding chairs and coolers follow soon after. Polo is an outdoor sport, and with warm January afternoons, the outdoors takes center stage during the tailgating. You are more than welcome (actually encouraged to bring your own food and drink, but if you’d rather just come as you are, there are always a few food and beverage vendors on hand to take care of your refreshment. New this year is the Polo Patio, featuring cold beer and wine as well as high top seating on the north side of the field. South side vendors include the Sarasota Polo gift shop, and the Clubhouse bar. The match starts at 1:00 pm, opened by the national anthem and a turn around the field by the stars and stripes, carried on the back of a thundering Clydesdale. Soon the horn sounds, and the ball is in play. Here is what you came for. The magnificent sight of horses and men working together as a team, the sounds of shouts and cheers, of chuffing ponies, the feel of the hooves pounding the ground as the players charge past, the experience is like nothing else. After the first three chukkers, halftime divot stomping gives the horses and riders a short break, and then they are at it for the final three. Before you know it, a couple of hours have slipped past, and you realize as the sun is lower in the sky, that the Sarasota Polo Club may be the perfect place to spend a Sunday afternoon.
