Prospect Mountain, Lake George

4.6
Take a 4.7 km (2.9 mi) hike, or drive to Prospect Mountain, a 616 m (2,021 ft) peak with a 160 km (100 mi) view of Glens Falls and Lake George. In the 19th century, the mountain hosted a restaurant with a dance podium, which had to be accessed by foot. A railway incline opened in 1895, but failed financially eight years later. You can still see the remains of the old rail system today. At the top, take time to admire the nature and vistas of the Adirondacks. If you hike up, be prepared for steep and rocky terrain; the hike can prove challenging for novice hikers. Be sure to pack plenty of water. • We are not the biggest hikers, but we did the trip with our children and our little dog without too much difficulty. There are a lot of rocks, especially in the first part of the journey. The view is nice, but not great. Anyone who has already done a few mountains will probably share this opinion. Still a very nice outing in a region that I love!

  • Beautiful views. Drive up and then you can take a shuttle or walk up to the summit. We walked and it is steep. Not for the out of shape! Nice views  more »
  • Nothing finer than a day in the woods getting away from a tourist trap town to hike up the mountain to a 100-year defunct tourist trap. Not much for scenic viewing until you get to the top, but the to...  more »

  • Unfortunately not the best day for site seeing but I have been there before and it is awesome!!! You can normally see an amazing view of Lake George and all of the surroundings which is absolutely beautiful!!! My friend and I hiked up and it took about an hour and a half. There is a trail, sometimes a bit easy to veer off of but you won't get lost, keep going up :) at the top there are picnic tables and I think bathrooms? Even on a foggy day it is so worth the climb!! Have fun!!
  • I love the outdoors!!! There are 3 scenic outlook points as you drive up after paying $10 at the bottom of the mountain. I mean it's fair since they keep the road and trails clean. Loved the views and the fresh cleaner air at the top. A+ for hiking if you're in the area.
  • The hike to the summit is beautiful and the view from the summit is breathtaking.
  • Hiked to the top. Was rewarded with a truly astonishing view from the summit
