  • In between mile markers 5 and 6 on Highway 30 on the Maalaea side is a cattle gate. I recommend parking there if you have a car. Go through the gate and there is a parking lot up the drive but it is dirt and not in the best of shape. Your car is also very secluded so lock up and leave nothing in view. The trail is quite challenging if you are not used to climbing. It ascends most all the way with little breaks. You are walking over volcanic rock that radiates heat from the sun and can be tough in certain areas. There is little shade if any. Wear sturdy shoes, wear sunscreen, bring lots of water (we sucked down 6 bottles), and secure anything that can blow away such as hats. Wind can be fierce and you don't want to be chasing clothing over a ridge. Be prepared to spend 3 to 4 hours total going up and back down (the one side). I rate this trail a high moderate difficulty due to wind, heat, and length of time. Take your time and don't be afraid to turn around because the best views are half way up. You won't see the windmills until you are 3/4 of the way there. Also, start at the point RIGHT of the sign where my wife is in the picture. Don't take the path to left of the sign
  • If it is windy, it's a bit more treacherous. If you have any form of vertigo or fear of heights, it's not the best idea. Hope this is helpful, but it's so beautiful. For the bootcamp or crossfit types, this will seem too easy. Just be careful!
  • The trail is rough in places, volcanic rocks and stuff, definitely would recommend sturdy shoes for this. There is no shade, and it gets hot - bring plenty of water. The wind turbines are huge and further off than they appear, but that ridge gets a marvelous cool breeze. The adventuresome can make a loop from the eastern trailhead on some dirt roads, but there's a bunch of miles and climbing involved.
  • This is not a easy hike, but worth it. We went to the "wind farm" and came back. Six miles round trip all uneven/rocky trails. bouldering. Great opportunities for whale watching as well. I think the trail gets lots of use, but it's respected by the people using it (clean). The views are amazing. Be prepared, bring water and trekking poles (if you aren't comfortable climbing rocks, or don't have the best knees). With the elevation change, you will get a workout. Leave the cooler in the car for when you get back, a cold drink and food were really good.
  • Super fun, easy trail. All you need is a pair of vans ultrarange shoes and you'll be bouncing from rock to rock 👍🏽
