The Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist or La Cathédrale St-Jean, originally called l'Église St-Jean du Vermilion, is the cathedral and mother church of the Catholic Diocese of Lafayette. It was the first parish in Lafayette Parish, founded in 1821, and was made cathedral upon the erection of the diocese in 1918.The historic church, located at 515 Cathedral Street in downtown Lafayette, is the third structure built on the site. The land was donated in 1821 by Jean Mouton, a wealthy planter who had founded the town as Vermilionville. It was completed in 1916 in the Dutch Romanesque Revival style, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. A large red and white brick structure, its notable features include stained glass produced in Munich depicting the life of the patron, oil paintings of Christ and the Apostles, and a Casavant Frères organ.St. John's Cemetery is the oldest in the city of Lafayette. Notable burials include Jean Mouton, who donated the property for the church; his son Alexandre Mouton, a U.S. senator and governor of Louisiana; his grandson Alfred Mouton, a Confederate general in the American Civil War; and Jefferson Caffery, a distinguished U.S. diplomat who was a Lafayette native.

  • This is a beautiful brick cathedral in downtown Lafayette. The stain glass windows depict scenes from the life of Christ. Outside is an incredible live oak tree that alone is worth the visit. I appreciate everything about this church which is so conducive to worship.
  • I was the Director of Finance here for 17 years; did outstanding hard work all for the love of God. Did exemplary work on the Cathedral Church/School Capital Campaign building the Fine Arts Center and the Cathedral Hall.
  • Old nd Beautiful brick n stained glass cathedral in the heart of Downtown Lafayette.
  • The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist is a beautiful church located in downtown Lafayette, LA. The cathedral itself is an incredible structure of light colored brick with white accents. On the property is a massive 500-year-old oak tree with a canopy that stretches over 200 feet! The trunk is 28 feet around and has an interesting shape due to the winds that have slowly twisted it over the centuries. If you're in Lafayette, this is a wonderful destination for a quick stop or for a service.
  • We just stopped and walked around outside, but it was beautiful!
