Torrey Pines Gliderport, La Jolla

4.7
Soar high above the coast of the Pacific Ocean in a tandem paraglide or tandem hang-glider at Torrey Pines Gliderport. Both options provide a relaxed, smooth flight with a qualified instructor. The company also offers various levels of classes on paragliding and solo hang-gliding. If flying isn't your thing, head up to the Cliffhanger Cafe for dinner with a view at the top of the Torrey Pines sea cliffs. As you eat, paragliders begin their flights right before your eyes. • I came early in the day because it's first come first serve to paraglide. Unfortunately, I had to wait a few hours for mother nature to cooperate and give us some good flying conditions. That wasn't a...  more »
  • Hanggliding with a pro, overlooking ocean pacific and experience flying. Close to La Jolla and easy to find, rather expensive activity.  more »
  • I'm a local. I, as a matter of course, start my tours at the Gliderport. The view is impactful. There is a cafe for lunch or snacks. One could "hang" there for more than an hour. The breeze is right o...  more »

  • We had a spectacular time at the Torrey Pines Gliderport! The location is easy to find. We came here with the main purpose of using the nearby trail down to Black's Beach. We decided to have a picnic lunch and sit at the tables at the Cafe. The view were absolutely gorgeous as well as exciting watching the paragliders soar in the sky. Please be extra cautious if you decide to go down the trail. IF you have bad knees, I would definitely advise against going down. Please be aware that at the end of the trail, there will be some naked people. I am still getting over it ;-)
  • I am not a hang glider, but I came here several times during breaks while providing customer service/security for the Farmers' Insurance PGA Open this past weekend. The cafe here has some nice sandwiches and a variety of sodas at a not cheap but quite reasonable price for the venue it is, a busy beach cafe. Sit at the cafe's picnic tables and enjoy looking out at the beach over the grassy area where the hang gliders launch. If you're blessed (as I was) you'll see at least one take off. I will caution that while you can (as I understand it) access Black's Beach from here, you will have to walk quite a distance on a trail, as the entire area I saw, both at Gliderport, and on the bluffs behind Salk Institute, are up on cliffs. I'd choose a different beach if I wanted to go down on the beach, but having lived in northern California for awhile, I do love walking on headlands above the ocean, which I was able to do behind Salk and could be done from Gliderport as well.
  • Great place to come watch the sunset, or partake in gliding if you're adventurous. They offer classes and instructor-tag along flights. There's also a cafe that has good sandwiches, refreshments and ice cream. Their hours are weird tho, so make sure to call or check in advance. Also they're closed at night. Beautiful views and a must see in San Diego. Plenty of parking (unpaved lot).
  • Torrent Pines, AKA Gliderport, is a great access point to the beach. Up on a high cliff, you can peer down at the water as you carefully make your way down the busy and steep steps. With the beach and the University (UCSD) within walking distance, Gliderport is a popular place to park for students and tourists alike. The beach, also known as Blacks Beach, is a nude beach. Most days you can see surfers and a few naked men. In general, it's a great, if not slightly busy, place to relax, swim, and enjoy the sunny San Diego climate. Don't forget that whatever goes down, must come up ;)!
  • Epic views, good food, great place to take a tandem flight over black's beach, or learn how to fly yourself! I took flying lessons here and the team is one of the best in the world, and this location is known worldwide. Take advantage while you are here! do note - only portable restrooms, but you can drop into Bella vista social club nearby if they are open and you want or need a standard restroom. Enjoy!
