Torrey Pines Gliderport, La Jolla

Soar high above the coast of the Pacific Ocean in a tandem paraglide or tandem hang-glider at Torrey Pines Gliderport. Both options provide a relaxed, smooth flight with a qualified instructor. The company also offers various levels of classes on paragliding and solo hang-gliding. If flying isn't your thing, head up to the Cliffhanger Cafe for dinner with a view at the top of the Torrey Pines sea cliffs. As you eat, paragliders begin their flights right before your eyes. • There was little wind the day we were there, but I can say if you have the guts, go for it!! It's really pretty, instructions are great. You can practice and watch others practice. The only draw back ...  more »
  • My travel companion was adamant on doing this. Me not so much. Fear of heights here. I have to say when she signed me up I almost threw up. When I was strapped to my pilot and flew off the cliff. Wow....  more »

  • A must visit even if you are not into gliding. I am not. It has some of the most fantastic views of the ocean from a higher altitude. When we went, it was a little cloudy but still great views. The glider port closes at 5.30 but you can still see gliders even after that. There is a good seating area to have a cup of coffee or beer and enjoy the view as well as the folks gliding. There is a huge grass area where the preparations before flight are done. The food shops were closed when we went, so cant comment on that.
  • nice sandwiches that reminded me of the oyster farming business in main. Brought my own helicopter, but not allowed to launch off there. Still nice views. great grass up there. Made me feel electric and abrasive.
  • This place is a hidden gem! Even a lot of locals don't know about it. You can have an awesome lunch (I had the tortilla soup and an amazing sandwich called "the tandem") while watching the paraglider come and go. There is always a lot of parking and places to sit and chill. I suggest bringing a blanket, it can be a bit cool sometimes, even when it's warm inland.
  • Excellent ride if you're doing tangent flights. I highly recommend it, and if you can -- request Charlie to fly you. Great experience with great food too!
  • Visited the gliderport with my wife like a week ago. Very professional and helpful. My wifes instructor was skilled and made her feel comfortable even though she was very nervous. Unfortunately I wasn't able to fly due to foggy weather and calm wind, however there was no problem to get my money back. Nice impression overall!
