This place has a lot of potential. Maybe I visited during a bad time, during the hottest months of the summer. Regardless, I can't recommend it. My wife and I spent a few hours among the gardens, but ... read more »
Several beautifulgarden areas to enjoy and seasonal events including stage productions can be enjoyed here as well. A small café and the gift shop are worth a visit. This is one place not to be missed... read more »
Not as much variety, perhaps, as Huntington Gardens, however it was a very pleasant way to spend an afternoon. The little outdoor cafe was enjoyable too. Great place for children, they even had a litt... read more »
I love this place. Great for nature walks, weddings and photo opportunities! I like that you can enjoy nature without having to leave the city. I've been going there with my family since my kids were in strollers until now that they are elementary age and getting some great pictures along the way. Entrance is free the 3rd Tuesday of the month, check their website for the exact day.
I came here yesterday (8/10/16) too take advantage of the extended summer hours and free admission between 5pm-8pm. It was my first time here and I would definitely come back. The day was perfect with just amount of light (low for photos but very mood enhancing) and warmth. It was warm but not hot. Perfect under the shade of the foliage. The expansive gardens was a walk through many landscapes from the rose garden, to the desert, to the chaparral to dense forest and to a Japanese garden. There are plentiful places to sit and relax. The gift shop is a bit over priced but really cute. I didn't get a chance to go to the cafe but it looks pretty stellar. Normally admission is $9, a bargain really. There's plenty of free onsite parking and the area has some good restaurants to visit before/after. Plus there are lots of Pokestops and even a few gyms!
One would expect much more of a park that charges 9 usd. Not much roses. Not much grass. No wide areas. Visiting a public park would be much better. Rather for the Boddy house there is almost nothing distinguished in this place.
What an absolute gem Descanso Garden is! It is beautiful, peaceful, and just plain wonderful. I love the summer series and events. The art gallery and Koi ponds are all top notch!
Entertaining :)) When purchasing admissions, the lady was kind. At the Boddy House, gift shop, and art gallery (& etc.) it was the same treatment — helpful and easy to talk to. Amazing staff! Descanso Gardens has a very calming environment with beautiful sights. I found my personal favorites: rose garden, Boddy House, and the art gallery, very satisfying — with break taking views. Contrarily, the California and Japanese garden were slightly disappointing. The CA "garden" (which was quite a hike too) was a mere house/cabin with a fossil display — and someone napping on the seat (though understandable because it's a very peaceful place) the Japanese garden was of course, a Japanese inspired structure with a lake/pond full of fish (not to mention a lot of those tiny flying bugs that bite you) Even better, there aren't quite as mant tourists as Huntington Park, so it's a much more restful and undisturbed surrounding. With all these wonderful qualities, it's no doubt going to be a very entertaining travel — see you next time Descanso Gardens! :))
